Tulane locks up piece of league baseball title
ST. LOUIS — Freshman third baseman Brad Emaus went 3-for-4 with a home
run and three RBI's as Tulane clinched a share of the Conference USA
regular-season baseball championship on Sunday with a 15-4 shelling of
Saint Louis.
The rout was halted after 7 innings in
accordance with the league's travel-day "mercy rule."
With the game tied at 3-all after four innings, Emaus ripped a
first-pitch offering from Saint Louis starter Eric Brewer off the scoreboard
in right field to open the floodgates on a four-run fifth.
The Green Wave, the No. 1 team in
the Collegiate Baseball News poll,
pushed across four more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to clinch
their first sweep at Saint Louis since 1997.
With the win, Tulane improves to 45-8 overall and 22-5 in C-USA play,
good enough for a three-game lead on current league runner-up Texas
Christian.
Tulane and TCU will settle the issue
when the Wave hosts the Horned Frogs in a regular-season-ending series on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
