Duo shares Conference USA weekly honors
For the second time this season,
two individuals share Conference USA's basketball player of the week
honors.
Memphis junior Joey Dorsey and Texas-El
Pasa sophomore Stefon Jackson have been selected for the accolade.
Dorsey, a junior forward from
Baltimore, led the nationally-ranked Tigers to a pair of wins this week by
nearly averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
He registered career-highs of 22 points and five steals in an 87-65 road win
at Central Florida, hitting a career-best 10 field goals (10-of-13). He also
had four steals and two blocks in an 88-52 victory over Southern Methodist.
His 162 career blocks move him into sixth place on the Memphis career chart.
In the two games, Dorsey was 12-of-16 from the field.
Jackson, a sophomore guard from
Philadelphia, posted a pair of 20-point games last week and set a UTEP
record for rebounds by a guard against Houston on Saturday. Jackson started
the week with 20 points, going 7-of-15 from the field, with three rebounds
in 29 minutes in the Miners' 87-78 loss at Southern Miss. In Saturday's
79-71 win over Houston, he collected 21 points, 17 rebounds, three assists
and a steal in 37 minutes.
Trojans sell out women's game with UCLA
The Southern Cal women's
basketball team has set a new milestone for the program, as all
tickets have been sold for the upcoming cross-town rivalry
showdown between the Women of Troy and UCLA. The sellout is the
first such achievement for the Trojans' women's team, which
welcomes the Bruins to the brand-new Galen Center for an 11 a.m.
game on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Recent matchups between the Trojans and
the Bruins have been heated. The past six games have been decided by no more
than four points. The Women of Troy have claimed the past four wins.
Saturday's game also has potentially
strong postseason implications for both teams, as USC currently sits fourth
in the Pac-10, and UCLA is in fifth, just a game behind the Trojans. Both
teams were among six Pac-10 squads that reached the NCAA Tournament in
2005-06.
Tests show Southern Cal kicker was drunk
According to a Los Angeles Times
report, Southern California kicker Mario Danelo had a blood-alcohol level
nearly three times the legal limit when his body was found at the bottom of
a San Pedro cliff last month, but the manner of his death remains
undetermined, according to a Los Angeles County coroner's report released
Monday.
The body of Danelo, 21, was found about
150 feet below Point Fermin Park on Jan. 6. Deputy medical examiner Jeffrey
P. Gutstadt wrote in the autopsy report that Danelo died of multiple
traumatic injuries. No illegal drugs were found in his body, according to
the report.
With the toxicology results now in, the
Los Angeles Police Department will continue its investigation, said officer
Jason Lee, a department spokesman. Police previously ruled out foul play.
