ECU's Frasure selected for league honor
East Carolina's Eric Frasure has
been named this week's Conference USA indoor track and field male
athlete of the week.
The honor went to Frasure after he
placed third in the weight throw at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, NE,
with an NCAA provisional mark and C-USA top performance of 68 feet, five
inches (20.85 meters).
A senior from Charlotte, Frasure also
was ninth in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, nine inches (14.55
meters).
ECU softball picked in tie for fifth in C-USA
Houston has been selected
the preseason favorite to win the 2007 Conference USA regular
season softball title for the second consecutive year in voting
conducted by the league's head coaches.
The Cougars earned 76 points and five
first place votes to claim the honor. Tulsa, the 2006 regular season and
tournament champion, garnered two first-place votes and 68 points to grab
the second place spot, followed by Marshall in third. The Herd picked up two
first-place votes and 62 points.
Houston junior right-handed pitcher
Angel Shamblin was tabbed as the C-USA preseason pitcher of the year, while
Marshall preseason All-America candidate at catcher Rachel Folden was
selected as the preseason player of the year.
UAB was picked to finish fourth after
coming off its most successful season in four years at 31-22 (15-9 C-USA)
and a second place conference finish in 2006.
East Carolina and Memphis each tallied
40 points to tie for the fifth place spot. The Pirates finished 40-24 (13-11
C-US) in 2006 and are led by Keli Harrell, a preseason all-conference pick
at pitcher. Harrell was named first-team All-Conference USA last season.
Harrell has broken the majority of the
ECU career pitching records and is now chasing the C-USA career strikeout
record of Depaul University's Lindsay Chouinard, who ended her career with
858 strikeouts. The ECU senior enters 2007 with 754 career strikeouts.
ACC football title game staying in Jacksonville
Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner
John Swofford has announced that the ACC will extend its agreement with
Jacksonville, FL, to host the 2007 league football championship game.
This year's ACC championship game will
be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium
(formerly Alltel Stadium) and will mark the third year that Jacksonville
will host the ACC football title game.
In the league's inaugural championship
game in 2005, Florida State defeated Virginia Tech 27-22. This past season,
Wake Forest captured its first league football title since 1970, defeating
Georgia Tech 9-6.
