If
you have to build a defense, it might as well be around one of the nation’s
premier cornerbacks. Since breaking onto the scene as a Freshman
All-America, Emanuel Davis has simply continued to get better. An All-Conference USA preseason
selection, the junior is already on NFL radar screens coast-to-coast. He has
a style that is one part blanket coverage and another part pure aggression.
Fans need not look elsewhere to see an elite defensive back.
Emanuel was kind enough to sit down for a chat with Bonesville to
share his insights on the upcoming season.
Q:
What can Pirate fans expect from our defense this year based on what you are
seeing on the field through summer?
A: Expect a fast defense, a tough defense where
everybody does their job.
Q: Is it possible to reload rather
than rebuild?
A: I think we are reloading. We have
talent and we are all motivated to win another Conference USA Championship,
get to a BCS bowl. We have high expectations and expect to be very good and
that is a good thing.
Q: Who on the defense do you expect to be a
star/stud this year that wasn’t a starter last year?
A: I would have to say Derek Blacknall. He
played a little bit last year, but that not that much. But, Derek has been working real hard and he has gotten
bigger, stronger, and faster. He is going to be good back here. He has
worked hard and learned a lot and I think people are going to be shocked to see
how good he has gotten.
Q: Who on this team do you most respect as a
player and why?
A: Steve Spence. You know he
got hurt and bounced back and he always has a positive attitude. He knows
what to do on the field and he knows how to get other guys playing better.
He’s got my respect.
Q: Are you and Travis the best corners in the
league?
A: I ain't going to say that there aren’t two
corners better then us because that is not the type of person I am, but I
like to think being the top is within our reach.
Q: What has changed for you this season? What is
expected of you this season that was not expected last season?
A: I don’t know if I feel like I need to do
anything different this season. I like to think that I am a competitor who
loves to compete so I expect big things and make plays. And, of course, it’s
a team effort and I expect all the guys to make plays and get the job done,
but I expect to make plays when I have the opportunity.
Q: NFL dreaming? Have you entertained any
thoughts of NFL and how does that motivate you?
A: I try to push that out. Of course, you think
about it but I just want to think about each game and about getting back and
winning another championship. It does cross my mind now and then, but I am
here to win and continue to build a legacy here at ECU.
Q: What receiver on our schedule do you most look
forward to locking up on this season?
A: The little guy from Tulsa (Demaris Johnson)
who really gave us some problems last year. He led the nation in all purpose yards and things like
that so I look forward to getting a chance to cover him.
Q: Who on our offense would you not want to have
to cover?
A: I would have to say Michael Bowman. You know
he is a smaller guy and a lot of people think that the big guys are the hardest to guard, but
it is the little guys that are the hardest; they are usually quicker in and
out of the breaks and can slip through a tackle. Michael is probably one of
the fastest guys on our team, so he would probably be one of the most
challenging guys on our team to cover.
