Each season, Darryl Freeney has raised the bar, elevating his production and separating himself from East Carolina's corps of receivers to establish himself as one of the biggest receiving threats on the team. He has already posted five (5) career 100-plus-yard receiving games (high of 152 vs. UAB) and that was in a more conservative offense. With a knack for the big play and a brash edge that he backs up with his talent, Freeney is a guy who has star potential, particularly in an offense predicated on the pass. Just a junior, he has been among the top producers at WR since his redshirt season in 2008. He is poised for another big season.

Darryl was kind enough to sit down for a chat with Bonesville to share his insights on the upcoming season.

Q: What can Pirate fans expect from our offense this year based on what you are seeing on the field through summer?

A: We are going to make a lot of big plays. Our receivers last year didn’t really get a chance to make a lot of plays because of the offensive style we ran. I am so excited about this offense and what I am seeing and doing out here. I am excited about all the playmakers we have and how everyone is stepping it up. I think we are going to put up a lot of points.

Darryl FreeneyQ: Why is this offense good for Darryl Freeney?

A: You saw what Michael Crabtree was able to do in this offense… the numbers he was putting up. I can only imagine what is possible for me to do in this offense. I am here working hard trying to be the best receiver he could be. I am pretty confident how we are doing as a receiving corps. We had the spring to learn it and also summer time so we know the plays, and the freshmen that came in, we’re trying to teach them what we can. I am really confident in this group of receivers and what we can do this season.

Q: Who on the offense do you expect to be a star/stud this year that wasn’t a star last year?

A: Without a doubt, Justin Jones. The things he is doing out here in practice is just jaw-dropping. Out of all of the players we have here — and there are a lot of good ones — I am most excited about seeing what Justin can do in games.

Q: Who on this team do you most respect as a player and why?

A: Of course, Dwayne (Harris) has my respect. He has been here the longest and has been making plays here for a long time. But also, I would have to say (Michael) Bowman. Last year, he missed most of the year with his injury, you know, and he handled everything in stride. He never complained and he is out working every route very hard. I am just in awe of what he is doing out here.

Q: Share your thoughts on the QB battle going in camp right now?

A: I am loving that battle, really loving it. Look, as long as they are battling it out, they are getting better. Competition pushes them and even though they can’t all be starters, they all have starter potential. So I am ready to receive passes from them.

Q: What are your thoughts on the defense out there?

A: I will tell you, our linebacking corps is looking really, really good. We are deep at linebacker, but also our secondary is good. You know how good Emanuel (Davis) and Travis (Simmons) are, but I have to say that Bradley (Jacobs) is doing a great job and so is (Derek) Blacknall, starting back there at the other safety. That group is looking very good, too.
