After sitting out last season in accordance with NCAA policy regarding Division I transfers, Akeem Richmond has provided a spark off the bench for the East Carolina basketball team this year. Although only playing a little over 15 minutes a game, the Rhode Island transplant is averaging 8.4 points per outing.

Richmond showed how quickly he can turn a game around when ECU overcame a 9-point deficit in the last eight minutes to defeat Houston 89-78 on Jan. 16. Richmond had four 3-pointers and two free throws for 14 points in just seven second-half minutes. That's why teammate Maurice Kemp calls him "the Microwave," also the nickname of former Detroit Pistons supersub Vinnie Johnson.

The Sanford, NC, native is the second leading career scorer in North Carolina High School Athletic Association history with 2,846 points for Southern Lee.

Akeem took time to talk before practice Tuesday afternoon.

Q: Favorite meal?

A: Pizza and Chicken Alfredo.

Q: Favorite video game?

A: I don't have a favorite video game anymore, but when I was playing video games I enjoyed Grand Theft Auto.

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

A: Yeah. I try to do the same two things before every game. I come in and get some shots up and then I have to take a shower. I'll turn my music all the way up so I can hear it in the shower.

Q: What were your reasons for transferring to East Carolina?

A: It seemed like a good fit. Coach (Jeff) Lebo is an amazing coach, check his track record. He's coached in the SEC (Auburn), he was a guard, he knows the game, and it's close to home for me.

Q: How tough was it to sit a whole season?

A: It was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. It's very bittersweet, because it helped me out at the same time. I've gotten bigger, faster, stronger, smarter and it helped me realize not to take things for granted.

Q: What is one thing most people don't know about you?

A: I'm a funny guy. I'm also very caring.

Q: What is the team's mindset heading into the final stretch of the season?

A: Our mindset is that we have to be focused. Every single day we have to work hard. We can't let any more games slip away. I feel like we're having a good season, we just have to stay focused.

Q: Your dad (Eric Richmond) played football at ECU. What was his reaction to your decision to transfer to his alma mater?

A: He was ecstatic about the situation. He was really encouraging me to come. He told me what a great university East Carolina was, so he was another factor in my decision to come here.

Q: If you could play alongside any NBA player, who would it be?

A: LeBron James. He's the greatest player ever, except for Michael Jordan.

Q: What's your favorite thing to do besides playing basketball?

A: I just like to chill. I enjoy sleeping, television and surfing the web.

Q: Who has had the most impact on your life? Why?

A: My dad, simply because he put the basketball in my hands. He's just a smart guy. He knows everything about life, basketball — anything I need to know I can just talk to him.

Q: What's it like playing in front of the Minges faithful?

A: Oh man, IT. IS. AMAZING! Like, amazing. The crowd is always into it — I would say it's the loudest in C-USA. Even though Memphis has a larger arena, I don't think it's louder than Minges. I love it.

Q: Did anyone ever shut you down in high school?

A: Nah. Never. Not in high school.

Q: Does Coach Lebo ever shoot around in practice?

A: I haven't really seen him shoot this year. I saw him shoot around a few times last year in the summer. He can still shoot it.

Q: What's your favorite thing about East Carolina?

A: I just love the fans. We have a great fan base. They really care a lot about their sports, whether it's basketball, football, soccer, baseball or any other sport. That's one thing I really like.
