Starter David Lucroy fanned nine and
surrendered only two hits over 6 1/3 innings to help East Carolina cap off a
three-game sweep of St. John's with a 7-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Clark-LeClair
Stadium.
A redshirt freshman righthander from Umatilla,
FL, Lucroy didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, giving the Pirates an
opportunity to take control of the game with a five-run second-inning. The
decisive outburst was highlighted by freshman catcher Travis Watkins'
two-run single and junior shortstop Jack Reinheimer's two-run double.
Reinheimer boosted the lead to 6-0 with an RBI
sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Lucroy kept the Red Storm bottled up until the
seventh, when he sandwiched a pair of walks around a balk and a strikeout
before being relieved by senior southpaw Jake Harris.
St. John's (1-10) ultimately pushed across all
three of its runs in the inning. Two of the scores were charged against
Lucroy and one against Harris.
Lucroy (1-1) earned his first collegiate
victory with the performance and Harris got his first save of the season
after blanking the Red Storm over the final two innings.
St. John's starter Ryan McCormick (0-2)
absorbed the loss. The freshman righthander was roughed up for seven hits
and five runs over 4 2/3 innings before giving way to a succession of four
relievers.
In addition to his
second-inning RBIs, Watkins scored a run and went 2-for-3 at the plate
for ECU.
Junior outfielder Martin Kelly had two hits
and an RBI for the Red Storm.
The Pirates (6-4) will wrap up their
season-opening, 11-game home stand with a Tuesday matchup against UNC-Greensboro
(5 p.m.) before hitting the road on Wednesday to take on Old Dominion
(3 p.m.).
