East Carolina senior designated hitter Chris Gosik belted a three-run homer in the third inning and the Pirates came up with four runs in the seventh to get by Monmouth 7-6 Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The game's decisive turn came with two outs in ECU's half of the seventh and the Pirates trailing 4-3. After senior second baseman Bryan Bass reached first on an infield error, the Pirates took advantage of two infield singles, a walk, a wild pitch and another infield fielding error to forge ahead 7-4.

Junior righthander Ryan Williams (3-0) blanked the Hawks on three hits for six innings and earned the victory despite surrendering four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Only two of the runs were earned.

With one out in the eighth, Williams turned the mound duties over to junior righthander Drew Reynolds, who shut down Monmouth the rest of the way to pick up his fifth save.

The Hawks outhit the Pirates 12-8. They were led at the plate by sophomore designated hitter Craig Sweeney and freshman outfielder Dan Shea with three hits apiece. Sweeney added a game-high 3 runs batted in.

Senior shortstop Jack Reinheimer and junior outfielder Dylan Brown each had a pair of hits for ECU.

Monmouth starter Dan Smith, a senior southpaw, gave up six runs — three earned — on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings before giving way to T.J. Hunt. A sophomore righthander, Hunt (1-2) logged only 1/3 inning but was charged with an unearned run and the loss.

Senior rightie Neil Harm held ECU at bay after taking over for Hunt to start the eighth.

The Pirates, who fell to Monmouth 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday, will try to capture the series when the teams face off Sunday at 1 p.m.
