MEMPHIS — The Pirates
worked out for about 90 minutes on New Year's Eve
afternoon. Most of the functions this week have been a
little behind schedule, but Wednesday's workout actually
started early.
Several of the Pirate
coaches indicated to me that this group had been focused
all week, and that this has been a great week of
practice.
Pirate Coach Skip Holtz
echoed those thoughts after practice.
Holtz also said he
wasn't worried about his team celebrating too on New
Year's Eve.
"If they get a (New
Year's) kiss it'll have to be from their roommate,"
joked Holtz. "They're going to bring in the new year in
bed. That's part of playing in a January 2nd game."
Holtz said that he
would have loved to have given his team a longer night
out, but it was just too close to game day for that.
ECU defensive
coordinator Greg Hudson held his news conference
Wednesday.
Hudson had the lightest
moment of bowl week to date. The Embassy Suites is the
official media hotel, and host for the various news
conferences. The Liberty Bowl had rented out three
adjoining rooms for a media workroom and for the news
conferences. However, somehow a ladies holiday party
rented the middle room for Wednesday afternoon.
Just after Coach Hud
started with his opening comments a lady poked her head
in the door.
"The speakers are on
over here and I don't know if you folks want us to know
what you're talking about or not," she said with a scowl
on her face. She wasn't real happy that her party was
being interrupted by a coach talking about defense.
She went back to her
party and then with his voice as deep as he could get
it, Coach Hudson barked into the microphone, "Can you
hear me? We have you surrounded... Come out with your
hands up...."
The place roared with
laughter. Somehow, I don't think the ladies thought it
was all that funny....
Today, Coach Holtz and
Kentucky coach Rich Brooks meet the media for the final
time before this 50th annual Autozone Liberty Bowl. Both
teams also have closed workouts at Liberty Bowl Memorial
Stadium.
