Freshman forward Darrius
Morrow scored 21 points and four of his teammates contributed double
figures to help East Carolina secure a rare Conference USA road success
with an 80-74 win over Southern Methodist on Saturday in Dallas.
The victory was only the
fifth ECU has claimed on a league opponent's home court since joining
C-USA in the 2001-02 season. The Pirates are 5-53 in conference road
games over that span.
Sophomore guard Brock
Young scored 16 points, senior guard James Legan and sophomore forward
Jamar Abrams had 14 apiece, and senior guard Sam Hinnant added 12 points
for the Pirates (10-8, 2-3 C- USA).
Senior center Bamba Fall
and freshman guard Paul McCoy each scored 16 points, junior guard Derek
Williams added 14, and freshman forward Robert Nyakundi had 11 to lead
SMU (6-11, 1-4).
The Pirates led 39-38 at
the half but found themselves down by seven with 11:09 remaining and in
danger of losing their eighth game in their last nine tries.
Abrams made a
three-pointer with 10:48 left to launch the comeback. Hinnant and Young
each converted a pair of free throws in the game's final 25 seconds to
seal the win.
The Pirates return home
for a Wednesday matchup with red-hot Memphis (7 p.m.; TV: CSS). The
No. 22 Tigers (16-3, 5-0 C-USA) are on a 10-game winning streak and
likely headed higher in the polls after taking down Tennessee 54-52 on
Saturday in Knoxville.
