Pirates foil VCU in
overtime

East Carolina made a
sizzling 50 percent-plus of its field goal attempts but it was three
free throws in the final 20 seconds of overtime that sealed a 93-90
victory over Virginia Commonwealth Tuesday night in Greenville.
Freshman forward Darrius
Morrow converted one of two free throws with 20 seconds left to break a
90-90 tie and sophomore guard Brock Young nailed a pair of free throws
10 seconds later to lift ECU to 4-1 on the season.
The outcome took some of
the luster off a 35-point performance by VCU senior guard Eric Maynor,
last season's Colonial Athletic Association player of the year and the
son of former East Carolina star and 1979 NBA draft pick George Maynor.
Senior guard James Legan
scored 20 points to lead five Pirates in double figures. Senior guard
Sam Hinnant produced 18 points, Young added 17 points and 11 assists,
Morrow scored 16 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, and sophomore forward
Daquan Joyner had 12 points.
Maynor's offensive heroics
for the Rams were complemented by sophomore forward Larry Sanders with
16 points and sophomore guard Joey Rodriguez with 11. Sanders had a
game-high 14 rebounds.
The Pirates came back from
a 37-33 halftime deficit and outscored the Rams 11-8 in overtime.
ECU shot 50.7 percent (34 of 67) from the field while VCU (2-2)
converted 41.6 percent (32 of 77).
The Pirates will travel to
Rock Hill, SC, on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest with Winthrop, which is
1-4 after a suffering a 74-48 loss Tuesday night at N.C. State.
