Pirates reverse fortunes
against Winthrop

Senior guard Sam Hinnant
scored a game-high 19 points, freshman forward Darrius Morrow added 13
points and sophomore center Chad Wynn had a game-high 10 rebounds to
lead East Carolina to a 63-60 win over Winthrop Saturday night in Rock
Hill, SC.
The Pirates overcame an
early 11-point advantage by the Eagles to pull within one at the half.
The teams traded momentum and leads several times in the final
frame.
Winthrop led 60-59 with
1:07 left when Hinnant made a basket to put the Pirates on the top end
of the final lead swap.
Sophomore guard Brock Young's layup with 25 seconds remaining accounted
for the final margin as the Eagles were unable to convert
opportunities into points.
Junior forward Mantoris
Robinson led the Eagles with 14 points and senior forward Cameron
Stanley, a Wake Forest transfer, and freshman forward Chris Malcolm
added 10 apiece.
The outcome ended East
Carolina's four-game losing streak to Winthrop dating back to 1988.
Next up for the Pirates is
a game at UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday (7 p.m., WITN-TV 7). The Seahawks
are 3-4 after a 97-64 pasting by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday in the South Padre Island Invitational.
