Junior forward Brandon
Costner scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to lead
North Carolina State to an 87-76 victory over East Carolina Wednesday
night in Raleigh.
Senior center Ben McCauley
added 20 points and sophomore forward Tracy Smith contributed 11 in only
12 minutes to help the Wolfpack (6-1) avenge
a 75-69 loss to the Pirates
(8-2) last season in Greenville.
Sophomore guard Brock
Young, a product of Broughton High School in Raleigh, had game highs of
25 points and 6 assists and senior guard Sam Hinnant scored 18 points to
pace East Carolina's offensive attack.
A bit of controversy
flared when an apparent delay in starting the clock enabled sophomore
point guard Javi Gonzalez to get off a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give
State a 45-42 halftime lead.
The Wolfpack, taking
advantage of an East Carolina cold spell in the opening minutes of the
second half, went on a 15-2 run to build a 60-44 advantage with 13:31
left.
Young and Hinnant led a
surge by the Pirates that closed the gap to 78-74 with 3:21 remaining. State
reasserted control by converting a number of free throw opportunities to seal the
win.
East Carolina's
win last December over the Wolfpack is the school's only victory
over an Atlantic Coast Conference school.
The Pirates are off until
Monday, when they face another ACC foe, Wake Forest,
in a 7 p.m. matchup in Williams Arena. The 11-ranked Demon Deacons are
9-0 heading into a Friday night road contest with Richmond.
