Senior guard Aubrey Coleman, the nation's leading scorer, recorded a game-high 29 points to lead No. 7 seed Houston to a 93-80 victory over 10th-seeded East Carolina in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Tulsa.

The outcome ended the Pirates' rocky season and brought to a close the coaching tenure of Mack McCarthy, who announced last weekend that he would step aside after the league tournament to take a fundraising position in ECU's athletic department.

Junior guard Brock Young produced 24 points, sophomore forward Darrius Morrow had 22 and freshman guard Erin Straughn added 12 for the Pirates (10-21). Morrow's output tied his career-high.

Senior guard Kelvin Lewis scored 15 points, sophomore guard Desmond Wade had 13 and senior forward Sean Coleman and junior forward Maurice McNeil each contributed 11 for the Cougars.

Houston led 50-37 at the half and extended the margin to as much as 26 points in the opening minutes of the second frame before bringing in its reserves to mop up.

East Carolina whittled away against the backups and closed the gap to 9 with 2:06 remaining before the Cougar starters returned and slammed the door shut.

Houston (16-15) advanced to play No. 2 seed Memphis in Thursday's quarterfinals. The Tigers had a bye on Wednesday. [View Thursday's complete schedule.]

In other action on the tournament's first day:

Sixth-seeded Southern Miss ousted No. 11 Tulane 57-47; host and fifth-seeded Tulsa dumped No. 12 Rice 73-62; and ninth-seeded Central Florida sprung a slight upset on No. 9 Southern Methodist 69-53.
