NORFOLK, VA —
Old Dominion closed the first half on a 7-0 run for a 28-21 lead at the
break and the Monarchs went on to a 68-47 Conference USA win over
visiting East Carolina on Thursday night.
The Pirates wrapped up the
regular season 16-15 overall and 5-11 in league play.
ECU will head for the
C-USA Tournament during spring
break, with a first round game against Texas-San Antonio Tuesday night
in El Paso, TX. The No. 12 seed Pirates and 13th-seeded Roadrunners will
tip off at the Don Haskins Center at 10:30 p.m. ET.
ODU (15-16, 9-7) played
tight defense on Akeem Richmond, limiting the Pirates' leading scorer to
six points on one of seven shooting from the field. Richmond had an 18.3
scoring average coming into the game.
Richmond wasn't the only ECU
player who struggled. The Pirates made just 14 of 47 field goal tries
(29.8 percent) before a crowd of 7,029 at the Ted Constant Convocation
Center.
The Monarchs were 17 of 24
from the field in the second half, 70.8 percent, and made 29 of 49 for
the game, 59.2 percent. ODU was 0-for-3 from the free throw line. ECU
was 14 for 23.
Ambrose Mosley made five of
10 behind the arc to lead ODU with 17 points. Aaron Bacote had 13 points
in the win. Dimitri Batten and Richard Ross added 12 points each.
Freshman Caleb White paced
the Pirates with 12 points and Paris Roberts-Campbell scored 10.
The Monarchs swept the
season series in their first campaign in C-USA. ODU
took an 81-70 win in Greenville
on Jan. 11.
