The latest forecast for Wednesday
night's East Carolina-North Carolina baseball game at Clark-LeClair Stadium
calls for a 40 percent chance of rain.
If the wet weather stays away, the
evening's special guest has been known to bring along a little precipitation
of his own.
Williamston native and Major League
Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry said to have been the preeminent practitioner
in his heyday of the fine art of surreptitiously applying moisture to a
baseball is scheduled to throw out the first pitch.
ECU announced Perry's appearance,
including his participation in an hour-long pre-game autograph session, in a
Monday press release. A $10.00 donation per item signed will
benefit the Pirate Club, said the announcement.
It is unknown how sizable
the donation must be in order to entice Perry into giving the item one of
his secret spitball treatments.
Fans are instructed to bring their own
baseballs, caps, programs or other items they wish for Perry to sign. The
autograph session will begin Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. and last until 6:45 p.m.
The start time for East Carolina's
game with the
7th-ranked Tar Heels is 7 p.m.
Perry won two Cy Young awards (1972 and
1978), combining with his brother Jim Perry who captured the honor in 1970
as the only brothers to each win a Cy Young Award.
In his 22-year career in the big
leagues, Gaylord Perry was a five-time all-star, earning 314 career wins and
compiling an ERA of 3.10 in over 5,000 innings pitched.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall
of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, in 1991.

ECU Athletics report.
