Two Marshall players get C-USA honors

Rice senior running back Quinton Smith totaled 243 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Owls to their third straight win on Saturday, while Marshall linebacker Matt Couch and defensive back Joe Moravec were impressive in leading the Thundering Herd to its third win in a row. All three players have been honored as the Conference USA football players of the week.

East Carolina will get an up close and personal look at Couch and Moravec when it hosts Marshall at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Smith, the offensive player of the week, ran for 171 yards on a career-high 31 carries, scored two rushing touchdowns and caught four passes for 72 yards and another TD to pace Rice's win over Texas-El Paso. He accounted for 243 all purpose yards, including a key stretch when he carried the ball seven times for 32 yards on the Owls' 19-play, 76-yard drive that ate up the final 7:30 of the game after UTEP had closed to within 37-31.

Couch earned defensive player of the week recognition after he recorded a career-high 17 tackles in helping Marshall to a 42-21 win over Tulane. He added one quarterback hurry and two pass breakups in the winning effort. Couch led a Marshall defensive effort that shut out the Green Wave in the fourth quarter.

Moravec, the special teams player of the week, blocked a punt on Tulane's 24 yard-line to open the fourth quarter. It resulted in a Marshall touchdown six plays later that broke a 21-21 tie and gave the Thundering Herd the lead for good. Moravec also forced a fumble on a Tulane kickoff return that was recovered by Marshall on the Tulane 26 yard line, leading the Herd's final score of the day.

UAB women capture C-USA soccer title

The UAB Blazers won their second Conference USA women's soccer championship in three years with a 3-2 victory over No. 5 seed Colorado College in Sunday's league final at Southern Methodist's Westcott Field in Dallas.

The Blazers, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Rachael Axon scored a goal in the seventh minute, getting a one-timer right in front of the net off an assist from junior Jenny Meyer. It was Axon's first goal of the season. Junior Sally Palmer put UAB on the scoreboard again less than eight minutes later, taking a feed in the box from classmate Jill Porto.

Colorado College got some help on an own goal in the 34th minute and the Tigers were only down 2-1 at the half.

Both teams continued to play hard in the second half, but neither were able to find the net until there was less than eight minutes in regulation. UAB's Porto took a centering pass from freshman Danya Barsalona and flicked it into the net off her heel to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead in the 83rd minute.

The Tigers did not buckle and junior Jamie Maltman, who scored her first two goals of the season in CC's 2-1 victory over Texas-El Paso in Wednesday's first-round match, scored again at the 86:32 mark for the 3-2 final. Colorado College's postseason hopes are still alive on the strength of its 15-5-1 record this season, the Tigers' first in C-USA as an affiliate member.

UAB earned the automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Championship.

Punter faces attempted murder charge

A former University of Northern Colorado punter accused of attempted murder has appeared in Weld District Court and was ordered not to contact witnesses in the case, according to a Greeley (CO) Tribune report.

It is normal procedure for courts to limit a defendant's contact with others involved in the case prior to trial. District Court Judge Marcello Kapcow granted the district attorney's motion.

Mitchell Cozad's attorney requested that an upcoming hearing be closed to the public and media.

Cozad, 21, is accused of stabbing teammate and fellow punter Rafael Mendoza in the leg in an attack on Sept. 11. Later, after police interviewed more than 200 people in the case, the Weld District Attorney's Office increased the charge against Cozad from assault to attempted first-degree murder.

Cozad, 21, is free on $500,000 bail. If convicted, he could face up to 48 years in prison.
