Weekly Pirate Baseball Capsule (04/22/02)

From C-USA Media Relations

East Carolina was 3-1 last week, including a win against No. 12 North Carolina and a pair of victories over Conference USA opponent South Florida.

The home victory over the Tar Heels drew a Harrington Field record crowd of 3,890.

Freshman first baseman/third baseman DARRYL LAWHORN, who was recently named to Baseball America's Midseason All-America Team, continues to pound out the hits and is currently batting .417.

The Wilmington native leads the team in batting average, runs scored (37), hits (68), home runs (13), RBIs (44) and stolen bases (12) and could become the first Pirate ever to finish a season leading in all six of those categories.

Lawhorn leads the nation's freshmen in home runs and has had two 14-game hit streaks this season.

Senior centerfielder WARREN GASPAR, JR., batted .462 last week with three RBIs and two stolen bases, while making some spectacular plays in the field, including an over-the-wall catch against North Carolina to take away a home run.

Junior shortstop LUKE CHERRY had at least one hit and one RBI in each game against USF, hitting a home run and driving in six during the series.
