Pirates Paired Against
Houston in First Round
From ECU Media Relations Game Will Be Televised by WITN-TV 7
CHICAGO — Eleventh-seeded East Carolina (12-17, 5-11) will face
sixth-seeded Houston (16-13, 9-7) at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 in the
First Round of the Conference USA Tournament. The game will be televised
locally on WITN-TV.
The Cougars won four of their last six games to finish second in C-USA`s
National Division after being sixth in the division in the preseason poll.
ECU was picked to finish seventh in its inaugural season in the American
Division, but the Pirates defeated three of the top seven teams in their
division - No. 9 Marquette, Saint Louis and Louisville. The winner of the
Houston-East Carolina game meets Memphis in Thursday`s 3:30 p.m.
quarterfinal.
Tournament play begins when seventh-seeded Louisville (17-11, 8-8) meets
10th-seeded TCU (16-14, 6-10). During the last week of the regular season,
the Cardinals defeated Cincinnati and Charlotte, while the Horned Frogs have
won five of their last seven contests. The winner of this game meets
Marquette in Thursday's 1 p.m. quarterfinal.
Eighth-seeded South Florida (18-11, 8-8) faces ninth-seeded UAB (13-16,
6-10) in Wednesday's 7 p.m. first round game. The winner of this matchup
advances to face Cincinnati in Thursday's 7 p.m. quarterfinal. The only
first round matchup between division rivals, the Bulls and Blazers split
their two regular season meetings this season.
For the fourth time in league history, two teams will meet in the first
round of the tournament after closing the regular season against one another
when fifth-seeded Saint Louis (15-15, 9-7) faces 12th-seeded Tulane (13-14,
5-11) Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. The Billikens are one of seven teams in NCAA
history to win four games in four days when it won the 2000 C-USA Tournament
in Memphis. In fact, three of those seven teams are from Conference USA.
Charlotte accomplished this feat in 1999, and Marquette in 1997. The Saint
Louis-Tulane game will be televised by ESPN2, and the winner of that game
meets Charlotte Thursday at 9:30 p.m.
With the exception of the Tulane-Saint Louis game, which will be shown on
ESPN2, all other first round, quarterfinal and semifinal games will be
televised by ESPN Plus. Please check your local listings. Saturday's 11:40
a.m. final will be aired on CBS.
