If a picture is worth a
thousand words, there would be no need for a column this week.
The picture would be of
East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis’s face after I queried him
about getting ready for the season.
“Are you ready to get to
work?” I asked the second year Pirate standout.
The look on his face told
the story.
“We’re ready,” Davis
smiled and said. “But we’ve been working ever since Coach (Jeff) Connors
got here.”
Connors has a simple
theme. It’s game day everyday.
That theme has stuck with
Davis.
“He preaches to us,” said
Davis. “It’s game day everyday. And that’s how it has felt all summer in
the weight room. It’s is going to be second nature when we get on the
field.”
I asked Davis just what
kind of shape this team is in as it gets set to report later this week.
“I really don’t want to
say because we’ve been working so hard,” said Davis. “I don’t want to
jinx it. Coach Connors has been quote, 'fun' for us. I think it’s going
to be a great season.”
Davis proved to be a part
of one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses in 2010. He says this
Pirate offense has even more potential in 2011.
“We can be a lot better,”
explained Davis. “Just like Coach Ruff says about me to you guys
(media), that we’ve just scratched the surface. This is our second year
in this offense. We know what the coaches want from us. Our tempo will
be quicker because we all know what’s going on out there.”
Davis is borderline giddy
when he talks about the possibilities in this offense.
“It’s going to be fun,” he
continued. “Everybody knows what to expect and what to do and we are
just ready to go out there and showcase our talents.”
The team reports to camp
on Thursday and will work out for the first time on Friday afternoon.
Saturday is media day and
then the squad will settle into the camp routine next week.
Davis has been a leader
since his arrival in Greenville last year.
Now Davis will get a
chance to lead this team in his senior season against a most difficult
schedule and a very balanced league.
As Davis and Coach Connors
would say, it’s going to be fun!
