Pirates ambush Houston

Junior guard Sam Hinnant
erupted for 30 points and senior guard Cory Farmer nailed a pair of
decisive free throws to lift East Carolina to a stunning 84-83
Conference USA victory over Houston Saturday night in Greenville.
The Pirates, who have
struggled offensively much of the season, exploded to a 49-37 halftime
advantage, but the heavily-favored Cougars chipped away at the lead in
the second half, tying the game at 75 on a free throw by senior guard
Lanny Smith with 4:21 remaining.
Houston moved ahead by as
much as four, 80-76 at the 2:19 mark, before East Carolina reasserted
control over its fate on back to back threes by junior guard James Legan
that put the Pirates ahead 82-80 with 1:45 left.
The Cougars responded with
another free throw by Smith and a pair of free throws by sophomore guard
Robert McKiver to reclaim the lead 83-82, setting the stage for Farmer's
heroics at the charity stripe with 22 seconds left.
Hinnant converted 8 of 16
three-point attempts and paced the Pirates with a game-high 30 points,
Farmer scored 13, and Legan and sophomore forward John Fields each added
10. Fields was the game's top rebounder with 10.
McKiver, who was 11-for-14
from the free throw line, scored 29 points, sophomore guard Kelvin Lewis
produced 19 and senior guard Dion Dowell had 17 for Houston.
East Carolina improved to
10-17, 4-10 in C-USA, while the Cougars fell to 21-7, 10-4, jeopardizing
their hopes for an NCAA Tournament bid.
East Carolina closes out
the regular season with a two-game road swing, facing Rice on Wednesday
and Tulane on Saturday.
