Herd unleashes Wilkerson
on Pirates

Junior forward Tyler
Wilkerson scored 24 points and helped Marshall control the backboards as
the Thundering Herd captured a 72-64 Conference USA win over East
Carolina Saturday afternoon in Huntington, WV.
The Herd dominated the
battle of the boards 31-14, led by Wilkerson's 10 rebounds, and
effectively leveraged the advantage at both ends of the court. Marshall
grabbed 11 offensive rebounds to ECU's 4 and pulled in 20 defensive
rebounds to the Pirates' 10.
Freshman forward Dago Pena
scored 14 points and senior forward Markel Humphrey added 11 for
Marshall (8-7, 1-1 C-USA).
Senior guard James Legan
had 16 points, senior guard Sam Hinnant scored 14 and sophomore guard
Jamar Abrams added 13 for the Pirates.
After the opening tip-off,
the Herd jumped out to a 6-0 lead in less than two minutes before East
Carolina (9-6, 1-1 C-USA) went on a 14-8 run to knot the score with
11:50 remaining in the half. The teams were tied at halftime 33-33.
East Carolina led 56-51 on
a layup by Abrams with 8:54 left until Wilkerson helped swing the
momentum back to the Herd with his scoring, rebounding and all-around
game.
The Pirates get a break in
the schedule until hosting C-USA West Division opponent Texas-El Paso
next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Miners, 10-5 (1-0 C-USA) after defeating
Southern Methodist 74-68 Saturday night in Dallas, will host Houston
Wednesday night before heading to Greenville.
