Junior guard Miguel Paul nailed a 3-pointer and senior forward Darrius Morrow made a pair of baskets and a free throw to stake East Carolina to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes and launch the Pirates on their way to a 67-47 win over Appalachian State Tuesday night in Charlotte.

Paul, a Missouri transfer, scored 18 points and Morrow added 15 to lead East Carolina (3-1) to the dominating victory over their cross-state foe.

The hot-shooting Pirates built the lead to 30-17 by halftime and never looked back, padding the margin to 20 points with 16:15 left then coasting the rest of the way.

East Carolina shot 49 percent from the field, including 58.3 percent from behind the arc, while Appalachian State converted only 31.8 percent of its field goal attempts and 31.6 percent from long range.

Junior foward Jamaal Trice, a Connecticut transfer, was the Mountaineers' only double-figure scorer with a game-high 27 points.

East Carolina hosts Chowan on Saturday at 1 p.m. and pays a visit to Norfolk on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Old Dominion.
