East Carolina extended
its winning streak to five and closed out its December schedule with
nine wins for
the first time since 2002-03
with a dominating 91-56 victory over NAIA foe Virginia-Wise on
Saturday in Greenville.
Junior forward Maurice
Kemp scored 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds and senior forward
Darrius Morrow had 15 points and 8 rebounds as the Pirates (9-4)
controlled the paint at both ends of the floor against the smaller
Highland Cavaliers (3-7).
Freshman guard Paris
Roberts-Campbell bolstered East Carolina's attack from the outside,
recording 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from
3-point range.
Other than a brief 4-3
lead by UVa-Wise two minutes into the game, the Pirates maintained
the advantage and the momentum from start to finish, building a
45-21 halftime lead and expanding the margin in spurts throughout
the final frame.
Sophomore guard Darius
Smith scored 17 points, senior guard Travis Berry had 13 and senior
forward Josh Jordan, who fouled out with 4:57 left, contributed 11
points and 8 rebounds for the Highland Cavs.
The Pirates outscored
UVa-Wise 56-22 in the lane and won the battle of the boards
55-27.
The contest was
categorized as an exhibition game on the UVa-Wise schedule. The
school competes in the Mid-South Conference, an association of 17
predominantly private institutions spanning eight states ranging
from Ohio in the North to Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi in the
South.
East Carolina forges
into its 16-game Conference USA gauntlet on Wednesday, challenging
Southern Miss in Hattiesburg in an 8 p.m. matchup. The Golden Eagles
will come into the contest 13-2 — their best start in 14 years —
after extending their winning streak to nine with a 65-56 road win
on Saturday over McNeese State.
