After focusing much of the first five weeks
of the season battling non-league foes, Conference USA teams spent Saturday
beating up on each other.
Undefeated Texas Christian protected its
spots in the polls (No. 20 in AP, No. 21 in Coaches) by shutting out winless
Army at home.
Louisville fell from the ranks of the
unbeaten as South Florida won its first league game at home in memorable
fashion, overcoming the Cardinals 31-28 in overtime.
Darrell Hackney passed for 231 yards and
two touchdowns as UAB snapped its three-game losing streak by winning at
Memphis, 24-10.
True freshman K Daren McCaleb hit three
straight field goals, including the final one with a minute left, to give
Southern Miss a 22-20 win at Cincinnati.
In earlier action, Houston beat East
Carolina on the road last Tuesday night 27-13 in a game that was showcased
in primetime on ESPN2.
TCU No. 1 in Golfweek/Sagarin golf rankings
FORT WORTH — After an impressive showing at
the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges, the Texas Christian
men's golf team last week was rated first in the nation according to the
Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings system.
The Horned Frogs also moved into the Top 10
in the list based on the votes of NCAA coaches, leaping from 14th to seventh
in the latest Precept Coaches Poll.
At the Ridges, the Horned Frogs were
competing against 14 other schools who were rated among the nation's top 30.
TCU finished five strokes behind tournament champion Florida, currently the
second-rated team in the country. With a three-round score of 859, the Frogs
easily outdistanced No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Southern California by 12
strokes for second place.
As of Oct. 1, four Frogs were pegged among
the nation's top 75 in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings system.
Sophomore Colby Beckstrom, the 2003 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, is
seventh; junior David Schultz, a 2003 honorable mention All-American, is
26th; senior Adam Meyer, a 2002 honorable mention All-American, is 49th; and
junior J.J. Killeen, who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2003 U.S.
Amateur, is 68th.
Baseball America honors Cougars' Cho
HOUSTON — University of Houston infielder
Hyung Cho was named to the 2003 Baseball America First-Team Summer
All-America Team.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Cho earned the honor after ranking among the
Cape Cod Baseball League leaders in hitting. The group was composed of the
top players from the collegiate summer leagues.
Cho, who was one of only seven players to hit higher than .300 for the
entire season in the wooden bat summer league, was named to the squad at
second base. In 35 games, he batted .336 with four home runs and 22 RBIs.
He was the only Conference USA player named to the Summer All-America teams.
He recently signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Mariners after
being undrafted as a junior in the 2003 amateur draft in June.
In 2003, Cho helped lead the Cougars to their third appearance in the NCAA
Super Regionals during the last four years. He finished as the team's Triple
Crown leader with a .360 batting average, 14 home runs and 66 RBIs.
The Cougars open their 2004 season during the Minute Maid Park College
Classic in Houston on Feb. 13-15. UH meets Kansas State at 11 a.m., Feb. 13
in the tournament opener for both squads.
