Half-dozen Cardinals scooped up in NFL draft
The Louisville Cardinals had a
school-record six players picked in the 2005 NFL Draft, which ended Sunday
afternoon in New York City.
The Cardinals were only one of seven
schools in the country to have six players drafted in the seven rounds of
selections spanning Saturday and Sunday.
Oklahoma led the way with 10, followed
by Florida State with nine and Virginia and Wisconsin with seven. Georgia,
Stanford and Louisville were next, with six apiece.
After Eric Shelton was the lone
Louisville player drafted on the first day, the Cardinals had five players
selected in rounds four through seven on Sunday.
Quarterback Stefan LeFors was the 20th
pick in the fourth round by the Carolina Panthers and the 121st overall. He
will join Shelton, who was drafted by the Panthers in the second round on
Saturday.
Safety Kerry Rhodes was taken two picks
later in the fourth round by the New York Jets. He was the 22nd pick in the
fourth round and the 123rd overall selection.
Linebacker Robert McCune was taken in
the fifth round by the Washington Redskins. The 6-3, 245-pound backer was
the 18th selection in the fifth round and 154th pick overall.
The seventh round saw a pair of
Cardinals go late in the draft. Running back Lionel Gates was taken as the
22nd pick in the last round by the Buffalo Bills and senior wide receiver
J.R. Russell was the 39th pick in that round and the 253rd of the draft.
Prior to 2005, the most players U of L
had drafted during any year was four, on four occasions.
