Super Regionals roundup: ASU loses on balk

CAL STATE FULLERTON 3, ARIZONA STATE 2

FULLERTON — Cal State Fullerton, the defending College World Series champion, was down to its last at bat before scoring the winning run on a balk to pull off an unlikely 3-2 victory over Arizona State in the opening game of its Super Regional.

``Obviously we'll take it (the win),'' said Titans' head coach George Horton. ``It would have been more fulfilling to win it with a base hit or a sacrifice fly.''

Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, the Titans looked as if they were about go down a game to the Sun Devils in Friday's opening Super Regional game.

Brett Pill led off with a double. Danny Dorn reached first on a bunt single and moved to third on Danny Dorn's bunt single.

``I was trying to hit the ball hard, put it in play on the ground and try and beat some infielders,'' said Pill, who doubled down the third base line to start the ninth inning winning rally.

Zechry Zinicola came in to relieve Brett Bordes, who had come into the game with two outs in the seventh inning for starter Jason Urquidez.

Zinicola attempted to pickoff Dorn at first base. But his throw went wide of first and bounced off the wall and into shallow right field. Pill scored the tying run and Dorn advanced to third on the play.

Zinicola then intentionally walked Ronnie Prettyman. After serving up three intentional balls to Bobby Andrews, Zincicola committed a balk allowing Dorn to trot home with the winning run.

Home plate umpire Andy Eaves ruled that Zinicola had failed to come to a complete stop prior to throwing the fourth ball to Andrews, thus allowing Dorn to score the winning run.

TENNESSEE 3, GEORGIA TECH 2

ATLANTA — After eight innings in which two of the nation's best-hitting teams looked anemic at the plate, two swings put Tennessee halfway to a berth in the College World Series.

Kelly Edmundson hit a pinch single to lead off the ninth against Georgia Tech reliever Matt Wieters. Two batters later, Rob Fitzgerald put the Volunteers ahead with a first-pitch homer, sparking the Volunteers' 3-2 win and giving them a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional.

FLORIDA 8, FLORIDA STATE 1

GAINESVILLE — The Florida Gators did something Friday night they hadn't done since 1998: hit three consecutive home runs.

Brian Jeroloman, Brandon McArthur and Brian Leclerc hit consecutive homers in the fifth inning to help Florida beat rival Florida State 8-1 in this NCAA super regional.

NEBRASKA 3, MIAMI (FL) 1

LINCOLN — Joba Chamberlain's performance Friday in the NCAA Super Regional against Miami was well worth the wait to Nebraska. Chamberlain had gone through his pregame warmup when the decision was made to delay the start of the game because of rain.

Two hours and 21 minutes later, a cramp-plagued Chamberlain started a 13-strikeout, no-walk outing that led the Cornhuskers to a 3-1 victory in the first game of the best-of-three series.

'Frozen tundra' of Lambeau not just for football

GREEN BAY — The site of the famous ``Ice Bowl'' NFL championship game in 1967 will host a college hockey game next winter.

The Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic will be staged Feb. 11 at Lambeau Field with Wisconsin playing Ohio State.

John Jones, Green Bay Packers executive vice president and chief operating officer, said Wednesday the game will be the highlight of a weekend of ice-related activities at the stadium.

It will use a portable ice rink set up on the north half of the football field.

In the Ice Bowl, the Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 on quarterback Bart Starr's 1-yard run with 13 seconds left on Dec. 31, 1967. The temperature at kickoff was 13 below zero.

Other recent outdoor games of note include the NHL's first outdoor game, in Edmonton in 2003, as well as a 2001 college match between Michigan and Michigan State.

The Wolverines-Spartans match in East Lansing, Mich., set a world attendance record for hockey with 74,554 fans.
