Demand swamps supply of Gamecock tickets

The Steve Spurrier era at South Carolina is already in full swing, ushering in the virtual rationing of football tickets a month before the Gamecocks' Sept. 1 home opener with Central Florida.

USC has established a school record for season ticket sales and all individual tickets for the team's games at Williams-Brice Stadium have been snapped up as well, the school announced last week.

The Gamecocks have sold 62,618 season tickets for the 2005 campaign, surpassing the previous mark of 62,103, set in 2002. The numbers do not include student tickets and tickets contractually obligated to visiting teams.

Because of the spike in season ticket sales, many Gamecock Club members will only receive partial season ticket packages for the upcoming season. Of the two types of partial packages that will be distributed, the first offering consists of a six-game lineup which includes all home games except Clemson, and the second bundle includes four home games, with contests against Alabama, Florida and Clemson excluded.

"This is a tremendous reflection on the enthusiasm generated for Coach Steve Spurrier and Gamecock football," said USC Director of Athletics Eric Hyman in a prepared statement. "To set the all-time season ticket record speaks volumes about the fans and what the future has in store for our football program."

Spurrier, whose resume includes a coaching stint with the Washington Redskins and successful tenures at Florida and Duke, succeeded Lou Holtz as coach of the Gamecocks after the 2004 season.

Season tickets will be mailed on Friday, August 5. Refunds for members not receiving full game packages will be mailed on Thursday, August 11.

USC's supply of home single-game tickets has also been exhausted and the Gamecocks' allotment of individual road game tickets, with the exception of the Arkansas game, are sold out.

The remaining tickets for the Saturday, Nov. 5 game with the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, AR, are on sale now to Gamecock Club members. Tickets for the general public for the Arkansas game will go sale on Monday, Aug. 1 at 8:30 a.m. at the USC ticket office or by phone at 800-472-3267.

Individual home and away game tickets will be mailed to Gamecock Club members on Friday, Aug. 12. Refunds for Gamecock Club members who were unable to get individual tickets for home and away games will be mailed on Thursday, August 18.
