Pirate basketball set for lights, camera, action
East Carolina's basketball team will
have at least six television exposures during the 2005-06 regular season,
the school announced Tuesday.
WITN-TV 7, which has an exclusive
arrangement with ECU to provide over-the-air broadcasts of specified
football and basketball games to the Greenville-New Bern-Washington market,
will televise three hoops contests, starting with the Pirates' Dec. 3 game
at Old Dominion of the Colonial Athletic Association.
An NBC affiliate, WITN will carry home
games against Conference USA members Southern Methodist (Jan. 18) and Tulsa
(Jan. 28.) The station will also
broadcast the East Carolina women's team's home game against Tulsa on Jan.
29.
The College Sports Television Network (CSTV),
which earlier this year launched a multi-year multimedia agreement with
C-USA, will telecast ECU's home match-up with league powerhouse Memphis on
Jan. 11 and the Pirates' conference game at Rice on Feb. 15.
CSTV's programming is distributed via
satellite giants Dish Network and DirecTV and is carried by cable in a
number of markets.
Fox Sports Net South (FSNS), a regional
sports network with a presence in numerous markets through cable and
satellite outlets, will carry East
Carolina's meeting with Atlantic Coast Conference power Wake Forest from
Winston-Salem on Jan. 3. It will be the first basketball game between the
schools in 20 years.
ECU, recently
picked by the league's coaches to finish 10th
in C-USA's new 12-team configuration, can increase its chances of having
other games chosen for television by springing some early upsets in Ricky
Stokes' inaugural season as head coach.
After the regular season, TV exposure
opportunities start with the Conference USA Tournament in Memphis. CSTV will
televise the quarterfinals on Mar. 9 and the semifinals on Mar. 10. CBS will
air the championship game on Mar. 11.
