Southern Miss punter wins prestigious award

For the second time in four years, a Southern Mississippi football player has been tabbed for the Woody Hayes Scholar Athlete Award.

The University and Northwest Sertoma Club of Columbus, OH, has selected USM punter Luke Johnson as its 2006 honoree. Former standout Golden Eagle quarterback Jeff Kelly received the prestigious award in 2002.

This award, which provides a living memorial to former Ohio State football coaching legend Woody Hayes, recognizes excellence in academics, athletics and community service among college and high school youth.

There are six winners for the award, a male and a female from each of the three collegiate divisions. The award will be presented at a banquet in Columbus on Jan. 27.

Johnson holds a 3.40 grade point average and graduated with his bachelor's degree in business administration in May 2005. An ordained minister, he was named to the 2004 American Football Coaches Association's "Good Works" Team and is heavily involved in community service, the Southern Miss Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Southern Miss Baptist Student Union and a number of ministries.

As a three-year starting punter for the Golden Eagles, Johnson was named first team All-Conference USA and to several All-American teams this past year as a senior. He was the No. 1 punter in Conference USA and was ranked No. 7 nationally in yards per punt. He handled the team's kickoff duties as well.

From a C-USA release.
