Key suspensions deplete Pirates' ranks

The depth-challenged East Carolina basketball team has gotten even thinner with a pair of player suspensions announced on Monday by first-year coach Ricky Stokes.

Junior guard Japhet McNeil and sophomore forward Jonathan Hart have been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Neither will play in Saturday's game against UAB in Birmingham, according to an ECU release.

McNeil leads Conference USA in assists with 6.7 per game and ranked fifth in the latest NCAA statistics published on January 31. He has distributed 133 assists this season, which is an ECU single season record. McNeil had started 15 games this season, while averaging 4.9 points in 27 minutes per game.

Hart was averaging 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 17 minutes of action per game this season. He had started each of the past three games.

ACC officiating crew benched for botched call

Atlantic Coast Conference Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officials John Clougherty on Monday announced the suspension of the officiating crew that worked Saturday's Florida State at Duke men's basketball game.

A technical foul that was called on Florida State's Alexander Johnson in the second half of play should not have been assessed. The technical foul was Johnson's fifth foul and resulted in his disqualification from the contest.

Because of the incorrect assessment and handling of the dead ball technical foul situation, the officials that worked the contest will each be suspended for their next game. The suspended crew includes Mike Eades, Ray Natili and Ed Corbett.
