Golden Hurricane starts spring workouts
Defending Conference USA champion Tulsa
became the first league school to start spring football practice as the
Golden Hurricane began offseason workouts Tuesday night.
Four other C-USA programs open spring
practice this week. Rice and UAB gets their spring workouts started today,
while East Carolina begins on Thursday and Southern Methodist starts its
drills on Friday.
The Pirates have set their spring game
for April 8.
Tulsa also gets C-USA's 11th football
season underway on Thurs., Aug. 31, when the Golden Hurricane hosts Stephen
F. Austin. A full slate of games will be held on Sat., Sept. 2, including
ECU at Navy.
The league's second annual football
championship game is scheduled for Sat., Dec. 2.
Tulane's 'refugee' grid team returning home
After a 2005 season spent on the road
while displaced by Hurricane Katrina, the Tulane football team will return
to New Orleans on Sat., Sept. 30, 2006, for the first of five 2006 home
games. In its first "true" home game in two years, the Green Wave will play
host to Conference USA rival Southern Methodist, one of four schools which
served as emergency hosts to Tulane teams last fall.
The Wave will also welcome league foes
Rice (Oct. 7), Southern Miss (Nov. 11) and Central Florida (Nov. 18) to the
Louisiana Superdome, along with non-conference visitor Army (Oct. 28).
Cage coaching merry-go-round
speeds up
A day after Weber State
released Joe Cravens from his duties as
head basketball coach, Dick Bennett announced Tuesday that he will retire as
Washington State's coach after the season.
Bennett, who has a 36-46 record in
three years at WSU, said that that he would turn over the team to his son,
Tony Bennett. Tony Bennett has been helping his father as an associate
coach.
Elsewhere, Rutgers athletic officials
are negotiating a buy-out of the contract of basketball coach Gary Waters,
according to The Record of Bergen County.
Waters is in his fifth season at
Rutgers and has a record of 76-73. The Scarlet Knights are 16-12 this
season.
