NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Next Day Nuggets...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
ECU's Smith is Johnny Bench Award candidate
East Carolina senior catcher Jake Smith
has been named to the 2006 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, according to
ecupirates.com. The award is given
annually to the top Division I catcher.
Smith, a Greensboro native, has played
33 of 34 games behind the plate and is batting .287 on the season. Currently
he leads the club in home runs (6), RBI's (35), doubles (10), total bases
(65), sacrifices (6) and slugging percentage (.504).
Calipari visits
Wolfpack
Memphis coach John Calipari was set to
visit N.C. State with his staff Monday, a source close to the Memphis coach
told Andy Katz of ESPN.com.
Calipari has been in negotiations with
Memphis about redoing his current contract, but N.C. State is making a
strong push for Calipari since it was turned down by Texas' Rick Barnes.
According to Katz' report, the source told ESPN.com that Calipari and his
staff were on their way to Raleigh to check out the facilities.
N.C. State officials began wooing
Calipari by visiting with the Memphis coach Sunday night, The Memphis
Commercial Appeal reported.
The meeting, which included N.C. State
Chancellor James L. Oblinger, athletic director Lee Fowler and other NCSU
officials, lasted for about two hours, the paper reported.
"We were aware of the meeting," Memphis
athletic director R.C. Johnson told the paper Sunday night. But beyond that
he declined comment while continuing to attempt to rework the contract of
Calipari. Johnson is also involved in the restructuring of the contract of
Tigers football coach Tommy West.
Fowler, who once worked for Dana Kirk,
a former hoops coach at Memphis, has strong ties to the area and has had
intermediaries working Calipari for weeks, according to Katz.
Calipari indicated he wasn't interested
in the Wolfpack last week. When directly asked if he would be interested in
replacing Herb Sendek (who went to Arizona State), Calipari told ESPN.com,
"No."
He said he wouldn't want to put himself
in the position of dealing with all that goes into being in the Triangle
with Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams. Calipari is
the king of Conference USA and essentially rules that conference as the
leader of the league's marquee program.
But taking a trip to Raleigh certainly
is a bold move that shows he could be ready to take the job. Memphis is
doing whatever it can to match N.C. State's offer. The Wolfpack reportedly
offered Barnes a deal worth more than $2 million per year.
If Calipari backs away from N.C. State,
the Wolfpack may turn to LSU's John Brady.
Barnes stays but Texas star headed to NBA
Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes is
staying despite a reported offer of $2 million annually from N.C. State. But
LaMarcus Aldridge, his star sophomore forward from Seagoville, is leaving,
according to The Dallas Morning News.
According to two sources, Barnes will
see his annual base salary jump from $1.3 million to $1.8 million with a
$125,000 incentive for reaching the NCAA Tournament.
Though Barnes will remain at Texas,
he'll be without Aldridge. The 6-11 forward averaged 15 points, 9.2 rebounds
and 1.97 blocks per game and has told teammates and the coaching staff that
he's headed for the NBA, according to three of the paper's sources.
Temple names in-town successor to Chaney
Fran Dunphy, who guided Pennsylvania’s
basketball program to a school-record 310 wins and 10 Ivy League
championships over the last 17 years, has been named the 17th head men’s
basketball coach in Temple history, according to the Owls' athletic web
site.
Dunphy becomes the first person to
serve as the head men’s basketball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5
institutions. He takes over from Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, who
announced his retirement after leading Temple to 516 wins and 23 postseason
appearances in 24 years.
