Judge: Buckeyes owe ex-coach big bucks
Awarding Jim OBrien $2.25 million in
damages "may seem unreasonable" after the NCAA socked him and the Ohio State
basketball program with sanctions, a judge said, but the fired coachs
contract demanded it, according to a Columbus Dispatch report.
Ohio State was locked into paying OBrien
after firing him because it gave him a favorable contract, Ohio Court of
Claims Judge Joseph T. Clark ruled. The Buckeyes, who have spent more than
$4 million to pay off fired coaches during the past two decades, said they
wont relent in this case. The university suggested it would appeal Clarks
decision.
Former Athletics Director Andy Geiger fired
OBrien June 8, 2004, after learning that he had loaned the mother of a
potential recruit $6,000. OBrien, who argued that he knew the player in
question was not eligible for college basketball, sued for breach of
contract.
Marshall takes preseason volleyball accolades
Conference USA volleyball coaches have
selected Marshall as the preseason favorite to repeat as league champions in
2006. The Thundering Herd returns three starters and 10 letterwinners from
last season's club that participated in the NCAA Tournament.
The postseason appearance was only the
second in program history and the Herd finished 2005 with a 26-6 (15-1
C-USA) record, its fourth straight 20-plus win season. Marshall junior
Kelly-Anne Billingy was voted C-USA preseason player of the year after
earning All-American honorable mention and C-USA Player of the Year honors
in 2005.
Conference USA adds administrator to staff
Donyale Canada has accepted the position of
director of sports services at Conference USA, executive associate
commissioner Judy MacLeod has announced. Canada will be responsible for the
administration and championships for several of C-USA's 19 sports.
Canada previously spent three years at the
Ohio Valley Conference as the assistant commissioner for championships and
senior woman administrator. She oversaw the event management of 18 OVC
championships and assisted with the administration and marketing of the OVC
baseball and basketball tournaments. She also served as the staff liaison to
a number of coaches groups and the officiating coordinators.
A member of the NCAA Division I women's
basketball issues committee, she served as the NCAA staff representative at
the 2006 NCAA women's basketball first and second rounds. She was also the
assistant tournament manager for the 2005 NCAA men's basketball first and
second rounds in Nashville.
