A trip to the C-USA semis & 3rd place finish no longer satisfying for the Pirates

With a great spring behind them and coach Rob Donnenwirth ready to hit the field for the first time with a team comprised solely of his own recruits, the Pirates skipper is already looking down the road at the end game. He admits that he never gets ahead of himself and with a schedule that is far and away the finest ever put on paper in soccer history, he and his team cannot afford to even peak ahead to the Conference USA tournament in November.

Nixon will be asked to take a leadership role in 2003

Still, Donnenwirth and his women’s soccer team won’t feel any satisfaction by just making the C-USA tourney semifinals. The goal of the game, Donnenwirth reminds, is to get to the NCAA tournament – an achievement that ECU has yet to reach in its history. And C-USA, chock full of powerhouse teams, provides a gauntlet that only a great team can survive. The Pirates, this year, field, probably, one of the deepest squads it has in history and the team is coming off a successful season last year to build upon.

“I don't think there is a clear frontrunner in the conference,” Donnenwirth speculated. “Many of the top teams graduated a lot of players. It will be interesting to see what teams emerge.”

Regardless, the goal remains the same.

“Our goal is to be playing on November 8th, which is the C-USA Championship game,” he said. “This is a team that I feel has the opportunity to win the league but we have a lot of soccer to play.”

To hone themselves, Donnenwirth has slated his gals to play against some of the best out of conference competition there is in collegiate soccer.

“Our out-of conference schedule is extremely tough this year,” he said. “We open up versus Texas – which could be a top-5 team in the country – on August 29th at the SAS Park (where the Carolina Courage play) in Cary. We need a lot of Purple and Gold for that game! We also play former National Champ Florida (at Gainesville), Wake Forest and host and Miami.”

To beat the best you have to play the best and the Pirates see the rigid OOC schedule as a necessary ingredient to building toward an NCAA tourney bid via the C-USA league and tournament slate. But there are other pieces coming together.

Last year’s team captain and three-time All-CUSA performer Amanda Duffy has been signed on to join the coaching staff and a strong recruiting class are other ingredients that appear to be brewing into the right concoction for success on the pitch.

“I've been very fortunate to have Chris Webb as an assistant,” Donnenwirth explained of his long-time assistant. “We have worked together for six years and we are at a point where we know what needs to be done without saying a word to each other. She is a tremendous asset to the program.

Duffy now a coach

“That being said, Amanda Duffy will really help in a lot of areas. Having another set of eyes to evaluate our own players and recruits is valuable. She has seen how our program has grown first hand and knows what type of player we look for. The team respected her as a player and captain so the transition as a coach should be easy.”

And of the recruiting class:

“We are very happy with our recruiting class,” he said. “We obviously needed to get some good attacking players with the loss of Duffy. We feel that Anastasia Nikas (from Arizona) and Carmen Calpo (transfer from Hawaii) will be immediate contributors. Either can play forward or center-midfielder. Rachel Hils (from Ohio) is a very good defensive center-mid as well. Competition for spots should be fierce, which is a blessing and challenge to team chemistry. I feel any of our 10 recruits can contribute. This should be one of the deepest teams we have had.”

The recruiting class will augment quite well a returning core of superb players who put together a very successful spring. Led by Mindy Nixon, who is a team captain, Penny Perrott, and Tina Rivera, the Pirates are clearly formidable in the back. The Pirates also expect quite a bit out of the team’s fourth senior, Cristen Bowman, who until this season has been a role player off the bench for the team.

“We had our best spring ever,” Donnenwirth said. “We have a committed group of returners and the seniors are part of my first recruiting class. I feel they are a very special group. Mindy has been a great captain and Penny Perrot and Tina Rivera have always been key players. All three start in the back, giving us a lot of stability. Our other senior, Cristen Bowman, has not seen a lot of time on the field, but she is a great person and is great for team chemistry.”

The underclassmen are led and inspired by rising sophomore forward Megan McCallion, who was one of the top freshmen in Conference USA last season, piling up a ton of goals. The midfield is extremely deep where sophomore captain Rachelle Cebeceiras anchors a staunch talented group.

The Pirates should have ample firepower and defense to make a run at the league title…but there are other teams.

Defending C-USA champs Charlotte are again loaded and Marquette, Saint Louis, and South Florida offer serious consideration. Moreover, Cincinnati is always a stalwart in the league.

Regardless of the competition, ECU is determined to make the world sport a priority. Winning is the easiest route to recognition and this edition of the Pirates has serious potential to win the league.

In order to get the best possible jump on the 2003 season, it is important to know what your opponents have. To that end, please enjoy the 2003 C-USA pre-season wrap-up.

Though Amanda Duffy and Unicity Dittmer will be hard to replace in the lineup, the Pirates will be able to do that thanks to some serious depth, particularly in the midfield. A solid recruiting class, a staunch defense, and a magnificent goal-scorer up front have the Pirates looking potentially like a serious contender to not only improve on last season’s fourth-place finish and tourney semifinal appearance, but also, to make a real run at the league title.

ON THE ATTACK:

Save for Charlotte’s Courtney Crandell, ECU had in its lineup, one of the most dynamic scorers in the league last season in freshman Meghan McCallion (10 goals, 6 assists) who not only knows how to find the twine, but also how to set up her teammates for put-aways. What’s scary is that she should improve this season. In looking for a replacement for Duffy in the attack, look for newcomer Anastasia Nikas and transfers Renice Shirrard (Iowa) and Kate Lowe (Barton) should fit well with veteran Melissa Penney.

Pirates are hoping McCallion can

produce like she did in 2002.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Sophomore captain and returning starter Rachelle Cabeceiras had a great spring as was sophomore Stephanie Walker at central midfielder. Juniors Sarah Stoltz and Jennifer Leonard bring a lot of playing time back to the flank midfield positions while either can also shift to central if need be. Also back is junior Krystel Pabey (2 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Ashley Stopa, who Donnenwirth called his best tactical player. Newcomers Carmen Calpo and Rachel Hils are expected to compete for time right away.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The backline is highlighted by the return of virtually the whole unit, led by super-solid defenders Penny Perrott, Tina Rivera, and captain Mindy Nixon (goal, 3 assists). Also, Megan Schwanke, another returning starter, returns to a line-up that is likely to be one of the better backlines in the league.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:

It appears that competition will rule the day when it comes to net minding. Sophomore Lauren Church had a great spring, but she will be challenged from freshmen Kari McCullough and transfer Lindsi Troxler (from Elon).
OUTLOOK:

A tough schedule can cut both ways so the Pirates run the risk of both ego-demoralization and both mental and physical exhaustion if not navigated correctly. However, if early success should find the Pirates, then games against Texas, Miami, Florida and Wake Forest will only serve to strengthen an already strong team. Look for the Pirates to, indeed, endeavor to make a true run at the league title in 2003.

Lost at ECU, 2-1 on Sep. 29, 2002

OVERVIEW:

Even though UAB finished in the middle of the C-USA pack in 2001, the team literally loses no real impact players. Additionally, the Blazers have a trio of dynamic scorers returning for what is expected to be a much better UAB team. The team returns a now experienced lineup, improved from last year’s youthful team. While the team may not be a legitimate contender for the league title, the Blazers would fall into the category of a team that could surprise if things go its way.

Kidwell will make a

run at the scoring title

this season.

ON THE ATTACK:

The Blazers rely on one of the most prolific and exciting players in the league in Tara Kidwell, who finished second in the league in scoring 29 points on 10 goals and 9 assists. Kidwell is not alone in the attack. A great deal will be expected up front from Jessica Barr (goal, assist) and newcomer Nicolette Nieves, a local star from Birmingham.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

The Blazers are deep and strong in the midfield. Jill Knottek (11 goals, 6 assists) returns as a potent scorer from the central midfield. Also returning is Jenny Rynders (9 goals, 4 assists), Liz Bosscher (3 goals, 6 assists), and Briana McCarty (10 assists) round out the making for an aggressive, offensive-minded midfield. Adding depth is Jennifer Calalang (2 goals) and Jana Brauer (goal, 2 assists), along with Jessica Samulski (goal, assist) form the heart of the Blazers line-up.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The back is anchored by senior Suzanne LaMotte, a very strong defender, and will have to lead a group of part-time players who are elevating into starting roles. Rebecca Garcia and Laura Skridulis have 21 starts behind them and should do well in moving into starting roles. Newcomer Philo Mbong may have an opportunity early in the back.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Goalie Lisa Nowoslawski is graduated and with her goes a very respectable 1.64 goals against average in her 19 starts. The real challenge is to see if either stellar, but inexperienced, freshmen goalies can step up to fill the void. Katie Forbis and Julie McFarlane both bring strong pedigrees and will battle for the job. Also, Disko did draw two starts in the net last season and provides an option if a transition fix is needed.

OUTLOOK:

The Blazers have a deep, talented midfield and an exciting player up top. The big question mark in the net could be a major barrier for Alabama-Birmingham in terms of moving into the upper echelon of the conference. The recruiting class is highly touted, but how they blend and how quickly will spell the difference. The Blazers will upset some good teams, but may still find the going tough as they try to improve on their 9th place finish last year as the league has a bunch of talented teams atop it. The team should improve on its 9-9-1overall record as well.

Won at home, 1-0 on Oct. 18, 2002

OVERVIEW:

Defending league Champion Charlotte has a couple of big holes to fill, but the 49ers also return a whole lot of firepower returning. Easily, Courtney Crandell will be one of the most watched players in the league this season, as she returns to try and follow up an amazing freshman season that saw her tally 21 goals en route to a 50-point season. The big challenge for Charlotte is replacing midfielder and team leader Mikel Casey, seasoned defender Kelly Eckstein and top echelon goalie Jenn Howell (1.08 gaa). These losses hurt Charlotte more than most as the 49ers are a true build-the-attack-from-the-back type team, depending on a full effort from the backline to produce goals up top.

Crandell was a freshman

all-America last season

ON THE ATTACK:

While Crandell – who was named a freshman All-America a year ago – is a pure scorer, it remains to be seen how well she can do without Casey in the middle running the offense. However, Crandell is not alone. Jill Hayes (6 goals, 5 assists) is a keen scorer in her own right as is Lindsay Duncan (6 goals, 3 assists), providing another strong attack this year.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Starters Kim Miles (goal, 3 assists) and Megan Terlip (goal, 5 assists) return to patrol the midfield while Leslie Canales (goal) and Jill Leeder (goal) bring plenty of experience and are ready to step into the starting role.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The 49er backline is the lifeblood of the team as they push the attack from the back. The backliners produced 6 goals and 14 assists between them. Jenna Brenes (2 goals, 3 assists), Tiffany Ross (goal, 11 assists), and Kim Moore (3 goals) are all back in the lineup this year and the expectations are high for the unit.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Goalie Lauren Dansby steps into the starting lineup after posting 8 starts. She comes in with a 1.45 goals against average and will have to fill some very big shoes in the departing of goalie Jenn Howell. Dansby could be in a battle for playing time as junior Andrea Kollmorgen, who was medically redshirted last season, returns.

OUTLOOK:

It would be too easy, given Charlotte’s success last season and the return of Crandell, to call for a repeat for the 49ers. Still, they are the team to beat and have an awful lot of talent in the lineup. For lightning to strike twice for Charlotte, Crandell – who will draw double marks for sure – will have to turn in a repeat performance and someone in the midfield must assume the emotional leadership for the team. The backline will be expected to be a formidable as it was a year ago. The big question is chemistry and how well the new starters blend with the returnees. If Dansby or whomever assumes that role can deliver between the pipes, Charlotte at the very least will compete for the title again this season.

OVERVIEW:

Excitement is brewing in Cincinnati following a strong spring season which saw the Bearcats looking sharp. Coach Meridy Glenn’s teams are never out of the hunt for the league title, as evidenced by last season’s 2nd place finish and next season could see the team returning to the top spot in C-USA. Much of that will depend on the play of the seven starters returning this season and how the battle for goal tender ends up. Either way, this team is full of talent and Glenn is a savvy coach who is always able to squeeze every bit of talent out her teams.

Wagner

ON THE ATTACK:

The Bearcats, looking to bolster the offense, have moved standout midfielder Tasha Wagner (4 goals, 10 assists) to the frontline. The move should pay dividends as Wagner was a very offensive-minded middie. She will tandem with Marie Strelka (3 goals) who was limited last season while nursing an injury. Veteran Lauren Buland should provide punch from the bench, if needed.  Additional depth is expected from Amanda Onnen, who was injured for most of last season.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

A trio of talented midfielders return for the Bearcats. Rachel Lieberman (2 goals, 5 assists), Lisa Stephens (2 goals, 2 assists), and Amy Mink (4 goals, 3 assists) will form the core of the central part of the field. Senior Ashley Murphy could win the fourth slot, but will have to fight off senior Erin Cain and sophomore Jennifer Sibert.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The backline will count on returnees Kristina Wilson and Renee Balconi (goal) to anchor the defense. Ashley Roush, a junior, is expected to join the lineup, after spending the last two seasons bouncing in and out of the lineup. The other position is up for grabs and will be challenged for by junior Angie Meyer and freshman Kate Norton.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Junior goalkeeper Tracy Hale returns after a season in which she posted 12 shutouts and registered a 0.58 gaa. However, even with those numbers, she will face a battle to retain her job as Glenn has opened up the position to competition. Senior Marche Gendrew (2 games, 0 goals allowed) and sophomore Sherry Slye (2 games, 0 goals allowed) will challenge for the job.

OUTLOOK:

Cincinnati may be the team to beat this season and looks to be a strong bet to take the regular-season title this year. The conference tourney champs are eager to take up the challenge laid down by Charlotte last season and are prepared to step it up in the league, which is the last thing that the teams hoping to break into the upper echelon need to hear. Cincy will be in the thick of it at the end of the year.

Tied at ECU, 0-0 on Oct. 27, 2002

OVERVIEW:

The Blue Demons want desperately to break out of the basement of C-USA. Will this be the year the team breaks out of the bottom tier? For this to occur, the Blue Demons are going to need to get a stepped up season from its top returnees and a heck of an impact from its nationally touted recruiting class. The team has talent returning in Julianne Sitch, Margo Sackmaster and Lindsey Deason among others. How they do in the leadership role is the big question.

Sitch is one of the top scoring threats returning to the league.

ON THE ATTACK:

Sackmaster (6 goals, 3 assists) is the top returning finisher up front for the Blue Demons and is expected to carry the scoring load for the Blue Demons until some of the younger players can emerge. Incoming freshman Lea Hill  was a simply dominating attacker on the prep level and is expected to be an instant-impact player as should fellow frosh Nicole Meschbach. Courtney Hannel could also factor into the lineup.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Sitch, a preseason all-C-USA selection, has already re-written the DePaul record books. Her 21 points (8 goals, 5 assists) as a freshman, puts her tops in history for the Blue Demons. She will lead an attack-minded midfield that includes Erin Walter (assist), Bren Sugarman (goal, assist) and defensive-minded Amy Witt (goal, assist). Additionally, starter Shana Mills and experienced reserves Colleen Ahearn (assist) and Katie Merz bolster the transition game. Newcomers Amanda Marier and Katie Kiene will push for early playing time. Also, Kelly Lord, a junior transfer from Eastern Michigan, should factor into the mix this season.

ON THE BACKLINE:

Starting defenders Erin Davren (assist), Amber Prindle (3 assists), and Jennifer Heil return to the lineup for DePaul. Senior Cassie Ozark, who saw little action last season after a big sophomore season, should add depth to the backline.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Lindsey Deason returns to the net after posting a 1.24 goals against average in 19 starts last season. She will be backed up by Erica Keppel.

OUTLOOK:

The top of the conference may be out of reach for DePaul, but a move to the middle of the pack is possible. If the freshmen can provide valuable minutes and if the experience out top for the Blue Demons can up offensive production, DePaul may make that jump. It will be a hard climb for a team that has struggled in C-USA play in recent years.

Lost to ECU (C-USA 1st Round), 0-2 on Nov. 6, 2002

OVERVIEW:

The Cougars could be in the upper echelon mix this year as the team returns all but two starters from its sixth-place team. Gone are active shooters Ashley Fortenberry and Sarah Hemmer but there is plenty scoring punch still in place. Otherwise, the lineup is experienced. Though there is experience in the lineup, a great group of freshmen are aboard and in the defensive positions, particularly, some of them could challenge incumbents for their jobs. The team would like to play a push-the-attack-from-the-back style and these youngsters could be the ingredient needed to produce a more lethal transition game. The question is whether or not the group will show the necessary improvement to move past other talented teams vying for the league’s penthouse.

Allwardt

ON THE ATTACK:

Sophomore Kelly Golden (4 goals, 2 assists) returns out top for the Cougars. Golden is potentially a big-time scorer and will be counted on to lead the team in finding the back of the net. Senior Nicole Aubuchon (goal, 2 assists) should be a stabilizing force out front for Houston and senior Leslie Guevara will also provide in the attack. Sherika Hardaway – a starter last season – will be expected to be effective out top.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Nikki Hawkins (6 goals, assist) is the clear general in the midfield but she is joined by returning starter Beth Outlaw (goal, assist) and should-be starter Stephanie Pucek. A host of rising sophomores will compete to round out the midfield.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The Houston backline is comprised of returning starters Anne Gasser (goal, assist), Emily Allwardt, and Alison Sinclair (assist) and the trio are a strong bunch defensively. The depth is untested, but if this group stays healthy, they should be a stronger part of the Cougar lineup.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Goalkeeper Erin Ferguson was strong in the net for Houston, giving up just 1.34 goals per contest. With a solid defense in front of her, she could even improve on that this season.

OUTLOOK:

Houston has the opportunity to make a move within the middle of the C-USA pack, possibly positioning itself well for the conference tournament. In the defensive third, the team should be solid. The test will be how well the forwards and attacking mids produce in terms of dictating the game. Given the competition, Houston may end up in the same position as it was last season while actually improving.

OVERVIEW:

An undefeated spring (7-0-3) season has the Cardinal fans excited for the upcoming season. The Cardinals lose only two starters, who combined for 6 goals and 2 assists. Still, the Cardinals are trying to move off the bottom slot in the league, which will prove very difficult given the talented teams in the league. However, the team is excited nonetheless. There may be some potential there.

Lower leads the Cardinals

ON THE ATTACK:

The attack will rely heavily on Lisa Martin (5 goals, 4 assists) and Megan Rasmussen (2 goals, assist), both experienced forwards for the Cardinals. Mandy Rost (goal, 4 assists) also is potent from the midfield/forward position.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

The midfield is paced by hard-working field general Gina Lower, who was a heady starter last season. Louisville’s midfield mindset is clearly of a defensive posture and that is underscored by the gritty play of middies Hollie Minogue (goal, assist) and Ashley Garcia (3 assists). Jenny Starr did not start last season, but she got into plenty of games. This season, she will be expected to up the minutes.

ON THE BACKLINE:

Defensively, the Cardinals rely on Nikki Ilg (goal), Heather Shreffler, and aggressive backs Sarah Core (2 assists) and Leighann Carroll (goal). Core and Carroll also may find themselves pushed up into the midfield.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

The battle for tending time will once again be waged by keepers Meredith Miller (2.14 gaa) and Lyndsay Siebert (2.34 gaa). Miller had more starts a year ago, but Sierbert got significant playing time.

OUTLOOK:

The Cardinals will be hard-pressed to get out of the basement, though they may not finish in dead last. Expectations are high for this year’s club, but the talented teams ahead of them still expect to have their way with Louisville, which demonstrates the gap between the Cardinals and the mid-to-upper echelon teams. Improvement on a 1-8-1 league campaign is certainly possible, though very improbable.

Lost at ECU, 1-2 on Oct. 25, 2002

OVERVIEW:

Of the teams in the league, none were decimated by graduation as much as Marquette. The Golden Eagles lost star Kate Gordon the top scorer in the league a season ago as well as six other key players, including goalie Ashleigh Koenig and her 1.24 gaa. But, as with most great programs, Marquette still has some things in the coffers.

Midfielder Jensen, left, and forward Ioder

will pace the Marquette attack in 2003.

ON THE ATTACK:

Julie Thompson (2 goals, 6 assists) is the team’s top returning scorer and will push attack alongside senior Laura Culhane (2 goals, 5 assists) and preseason all-C-USA selection Anne Ioder (2 goals, 2 assists) – both attacking midfielder/forwards. Carolyn Klopp (2 goals, 3 assists) and Kristie Matola (goal) also will contribute in the front.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Heather Goranson (4 goals), Clare Weber and Kristen Jensen (goal, 3 assists) - an all-C-USA preseason selection - return to the midfield and will be bolstered by defensive-minded mids Katie Michuda (2 goals) and Lindsay Smale as well as Lindsay Michuda. Sarah Johnson (assist) also should see plenty of action.

ON THE BACKLINE:

In the back, Marquette will expect non-starters, but very experienced defenders Jessica Ratcliffe, Courtney Sinsky, and Sarah Uyenishi to step up their games to provide a solid defense. Erin Jamieson will also look for increased playing time.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

The goalie position is wide open this season. The only real experienced keeper is Katie Bissen (1.58 gaa in 4 games). She will be challenged by Becky LaBarge for the position.

OUTLOOK:

Marquette will have to hope that they are just reloading, but the losses they took to graduation, may be a bit much to overcome and finish again in the top-5 of the league as they did in 2002. Still, Marquette is a well-coached, talented team and could surprise. Early season is the key to Marquette’s success as the team tries to gel with a bunch of new full-timers on the field.

Won at home, 3-2 on Sept. 22, 2002

OVERVIEW:

Everything depends on what’s out top for the Memphis Tigers this year. The team lost its top to offensive producers to graduation, so if the Tigers are to move out of the middle of the pack this season, they will need for a host of scorers to emerge from their current lineup. With a solid backline and goal keeper, Memphis is hoping that a 46th-ranked recruiting class may have among it, a star in the waiting to pick up the offensive slack left in the wake of the departure of Alison Baker and Becca Amrozowicz, who were the primary finishers in last year’s lineup. The biggest blow, however, comes at the unexpected loss of standout goalie Katarina Wicksell, who did not return to the lineup this year.

ON THE ATTACK:

The Tigers are in search of a goal scorer or two to emerge from the returnee pool. Scottish import Kirsty Marr (4 goals, 4 assists) and Brit Nicky McLeod (4 goals, assist) are the most likely players to shoulder the scoring obligation for Memphis. The two are skilled in the attack and will give the Tigers two strong first teamers. Last season, Amy Thesson was a part-timer. This season, Thesson will be expected to contribute more. Newcomers, Yuiko Konno and Candace Halvorson will be looked upon to have instant impact.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

The success of the attack will depend largely on the midfield for Memphis. Starters Leanne McGee (2 goals, assist), Robyn Smart (2 goals), Monica Powell (3 assists) and Mary Shelton (goal) are all back to provide quality at all positions and spearhead a very deep unit. Annika Moller (assist), Susannah Wells (2 assists), and Kristan Wilson (assist) will also compete for plenty of playing time.

ON THE BACKLINE:

Backliners Courtnee Melton (2 assists), Jocelyn Raine (goal), and Elizabeth Gardner form the makings of a very solid defense. Add Veronica Ruiz (goal), who gained valuable experience last year in a backup role and the Memphis Tigers look fairly solid in the back.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

The backline is looking to replace goalie Katarina Wicksell. Wicksell posted a solid 1.38 goals against average in coming up with 99 saves on the season. She also produced 5 shutouts a year ago. She was backed up by fellow senior Kari Rawe, who saw action in two games last season. Two highly-touted freshman keepers – Isabel Briones and Amy Clunie – will be in camp this year and may vie for the backup role.

OUTLOOK:

In a league where the top teams have pure offensive firepower, the Tigers will have to muster a much better scoring ability to move up from their position in the middle of the conference. It will be incumbent upon the backline and midfield, where the Tigers experience is, to produce early while the attackers in the lineup develop chemistry. Chances are Memphis will be, again, in the middle of the pack when tournament time comes. However if they can get some scoring, perhaps they can position properly for the tourney and make some noise.

Lost at home, 1-2 on Oct. 20, 2002

OVERVIEW:

It’s all about how the team views itself at Saint Louis. Either they see themselves as half as talented as last year or potentially just as talented. With 6 starters back, the Billikens have plenty of core talent to build around. However, the team will be without all-America goalie Meghann Burke (0.78 gaa) and potent scorer Jenny Kehl (5 goals, 12 assists), who both graduated. Also lost to graduation are two regulars from the backline. The upside for Saint Louis is that the team returns plenty of scoring punch and the team has its experience equally distributed throughout the field. The big question will be if the Billikens can find a goalie that is anywhere near as effective as Burke was. Saint Louis has a solid program in should be able to restock the lineup.

Cigno tallied 9 times last year

as a freshman for the Billikens.

ON THE ATTACK:

Jamie Perry (13 goals, 3 assists) is a talented scorer and should, again, be the thrust of the Billikens offense. Perry formed a nice combination with midfielder/forward Christie Cigno (9 goals, 4 assists) and the pair should be even more effective this season. The team will be looking for experienced reserves Anny Lucier (4 goals, 2 assists) and Lachlyne Eastman (assist) to provide a more regular presence this year. Newcomer Dee Guempel could also see some time out in the attack.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Kelly Ferguson (3 goals, assist) is the team’s top returnee in the midfield. The team needs reserve Trisha Niedenbach to assume a more regular role. Ellen Gerweck (assist), who played in 19 games last season, should be more of a regular in the lineup this season.

ON THE BACKLINE:

The Billikens style of plays dictates that the attack is pushed into the midfield from the back, so it is not uncommon to see the backliners pushing forward into the midfield when on the attack. The Saint Louis backline returns plenty of talent in returning regulars Carrie Carlson (assist), Tressa Pecher (goal, 3 assists), and Kara Kornfeld (assist). It is a question of depth for the Billikens. Some of the reserves must step up this season to ensure that the regulars can get adequate relief. Newcomer Courtney Hulcer will be expected to help add that depth.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Replacing Burke is going to be very difficult for the Billikens. In short, Burke was phenomenal. That said, Saint Louis is likely to have good goalie in the wings. The battle for the spot will be waged between sophomores Amanda Martin and Sarah Schweitzer and freshman Lyndsay Gensler, a highly talented, 6-1 prospect.

OUTLOOK:

For Saint Louis, it is unacceptable to not compete for the title. Though the team lost a star in Burke, the talent within the program is top-notch. The likelihood of the team not competing for the league title is remote. However, if the team does not find a reliable replacement in the goal, the team could see other clubs move up in the standings. Perry and Cigno should provide some serious scoring for the Billikens and with that arsenal, the team should never be out of any contest.

OVERVIEW:

Southern Miss was hit very hard by graduation, particularly in the attack. Gone are three forwards and the team’s top attacking midfielder. The quartet was responsible for 14 goals and 8 assists on a team that already struggled to find twine.  The strength of the team is in its backline and defensive midfielders.

Prewitt returns out top for

the Southern Miss attack.

ON THE ATTACK:

Lauren Prewitt (2 goals) is the only returning starter upfront. Reserve Shahira Ali saw little action last season and will have to get up to speed in a hurry. The rest of the attack will be made up of freshmen and middies pushing up in the attack.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

The midfield has some returning depth in Katie Randolph (4 goals, 3 assists), Micah Stephens (goal, 3 assists), Katie McClary (assist), and Samia McReynolds form a solid group. Depth is provided by Chelsey Brown (assist), Amanda Nadolski, and Kim Bishop.

ON THE BACKLINE:

A lot of experience returns to the backline. Starters Kay Beth Costilow (assist) and Emily Anne Chenoweth (2 goals, assist) form a strong defensive core. Also back is Rachel Jewett and Laura Mann both got plenty of playing time last year and should step into the lineup full time this season.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Goalie Anna Snyder (1.77 gaa) is ready to move up from last year's role as a strong backup to the feature role. Senior Jessie Gough is a veteran of the team and will serve as the backup. Ellen Ladner, a sophomore, will also compete for action.

OUTLOOK:

Southern Miss will have a tough time moving up the standings this year. Without the scoring punch of many of the other teams in the league and with a huge loss of starters to graduation, the Eagles are going to struggle in trying to break out of the basement this year.

Reed, a standout reserve in

'02, will be a regular in '03.

ON THE ATTACK:
Forwards Rachel Ross (3 goals) and Berna Breirem (2 goals, assist) will play out top for the Bulls, who rely on their midfield for much of the scoring. Breirem was a starter last season at forward and Ross showed flashes of skill during reserve action. Reserve Michelle Buskey saw limited action in '02 but may see a more demanding role this season. Christina Chandler (assist) saw plenty of action last season and could find herself in a more active role this season.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

The Bulls employ a very offensive-minded midfield set and it is within the midfield that the team has an opportunity to see a couple of veterans step up and make up for the losses to graduation. Top returning scorer, Rachel Thjmoe (2 goals, 4 assists), is a good one and she should be able to step up as the team's field general. Joining Thjmoe will be returning starter Tara Escribano (goal) and talented reserve Katie Reed (goal, 2 assists). Both players should bolster the midfield. Additionally, reserve Christina Koester (goal) will compete for more playing time at the position.

ON THE BACKLINE:
Veteran back Stacci Sastre (assist) leads the defenders for the Bulls. Sastre is a defender who oftentimes thinks like a forward. She pushes the build from the back is a very capable defender. Joining Sastre will be former reserve Jennifer Mulvihill (goal, assist). Danielle Malkin, who saw limited action last season, could see more time this time around as should Lyndrea Sutherland

BETWEEN THE PIPES:
Junior Breck Bankester (1.57 gaa) returns to guard the twine for the Bulls. Bankester registered more than 70 saves a year ago and should be improved this year. At 5-9, she has excellent reach.

OUTLOOK:

The Bulls are one of those teams that it wouldn't surprise if they make a tough run at the league this season. They are strong at home, but need to drastically improve on the road to better last season's mark. A tough schedule, with Central Florida, Miami, and Florida State out of conference could shake the team's mindset early if the new players and elevated reserves don't gel soon enough. Fleck is a veteran coach and has tools to work with this season. Still, the Bulls are a longshot for the league title.

Greenberg will lead the attack.

ON THE ATTACK:
The Horned Frogs return their second-leading scorer in Laura Greenberg (5 goals, 3 assists). Greenberg will lead the attack with support from former reserve Rebecca Repasky. Newcomers Ashley Fortune and Angie Nickens - both freshmen - will be expected to compete for early playing time this season.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Veteran midfielder Elizabeth Walsh (3 goals, 4 assists) returns to lead the team. She will be joined by fellow returning starters Jenny Swanson (goal, 2 assists) and Cara Toulouse (3 goals). Bara Gunnarsdottir also returns this season and will likely crack the lineup. Freshmen Karissa Hill, Kim Thompson, and Courtney Smith all are likely to see action this season.

ON THE BACKLINE:
Backline starters Lauren Siepiela (2 goals) and Suzie Walker return to the lineup. Looking to get playing time this season will be Julie Vaughn and Moran Lavi, both of whom saw limited action last season. Newcomers Holly Brady and Breanne Kaldheim will play immediately.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:
The position in the net is wide open this season as the Horned Frogs are without any experience returning between the pipes. Freshmen Jennifer Sims and Jennifer Wehr will battle it out for the role in '03.

OUTLOOK:

TCU simply does not have the guns to move up in the conference standings. Though there is some talent in the lineup, it doesn't measure up across the board to the teams that occupy both the penthouse in C-USA and the middle of the pack. A game or two improvement in league will be a big step for the Horned Frogs in 2003.

OVERVIEW:

Graduation hit Tulane particularly hard with losses up and down the entire lineup. No area was hit harder than the midfield, where the Green Wave lost all of their starters and even some key backups. The team does return some scoring prowess up front and most of its backline, so there is some opportunity for the Green Wave. However, it is going to be a major challenge for Tulane to even hope to improve on last season’s performance.

Gruber is an exciting player.

ON THE ATTACK:

Top scorer Lindsay Morris (6 goals) and Jessica Mendez (2 goals) are back in the lineup for the Green Wave. Reserve Tiffany Correia (assist) and Brook Parker (4 goals, 2 assists) will help add quality depth to the Tulane attack.

IN THE MIDFIELD:

Asia Simons (2 goals, assist) brings the most experience back to the lineup. Reserves Maren Miller and Kristen Tasca (3 assists) will be expected to step into the lineup.

ON THE BACKLINE:

Defensively, the Green Wave has talent returning. In Megan Franich (assist), Jacque Gruber (3 goals, 5 assists), and Kelley Smith (2 goals) are all back in the lineup. Reserves Blair Trickey and Jaclyn Benjamin will battle for a starting position.

BETWEEN THE PIPES:

Goalies Kristen Weegar (16 games, 1.88 gaa) and Megan Morey (5 games, 1.35 gaa) will battle for the starting job in the net this season. Both have played well for the Green Wave and the competition should help hone both of their games.

OUTLOOK:

Tulane will be hard-pressed to move out of the bottom tier of the league. Without experience in the midfield, the backline will likely face a constant stream of pressure from opponents. The Green Wave will be a good challenge, but will likely fall short in the long run in its attempt to move to the top of the C-USA standings.
