East Carolina lost an
iconic symbol of its
baseball program with
the Monday passing of
Les Garner at 89.
Garner, a decades-long
supporter of ECU
athletics, was a fixture
at Pirate baseball
games, bellowing out
“Take Me Out to the
Ballgame” during the
seventh-inning stretch
of games at Clark-LeClair
Stadium.
I always loved talking
to Les at the East
Carolina games, and
spoke to him briefly on
Saturday afternoon. He
was watching the
ECU-Monmouth game from
the same spot in the
press box from which the
LeClair family would
watch when Coach Keith
LeClair was able to make
a game before his
passing from Lou
Gehrig's Disease.
Garner, a former
Greenville mayor and
longtime civic and
business leader,
succumbed from an injury
suffered in an
accidental fall Saturday
evening.
I guess Les is already
bending Coach LeClair’s
ear in heaven, telling
him just how great
Clark-LeClair stadium
really is.
Our thoughts and prayers
go out to the Garner
family. We’ll certainly
miss you Les!
