Wake Forest waited until
the second half to demonstrate why it is the No. 6 team in the nation,
outscoring East Carolina 54-17 after intermission to transform a close
game into a 95-54 rout Monday night in Greenville.
Freshman forward Al-Farouq
Aminu had 21 points and 12 rebounds and four of his teammates produced
double-figure scoring as the Demon Deacons (11-0) dealt the Pirates
(8-3) their second straight loss to an Atlantic Coast Conference team.
East Carolina
fell to N.C. State 87-76 last
Wednesday in Raleigh.
Leading 41-37 at the half,
Wake exploded offensively and clamped down defensively to control the
second half from start to finish. The Deacs' seized the momentum with a
15-3 run in the final frame's first five minutes and didn't let up the
rest of the way.
Junior center Chas
McFarland scored 14 points, junior guard L.D. Williams had 12, junior
guard Ishmael Smith added 11 and sophomore guard Jeff Teague contributed
10 for Wake Forest.
Seventeen players saw
action for the Deacons.
Freshman forward Darrius
Morrow led the Pirates with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
The Pirates return to
action after Christmas, traveling to Myrtle Beach on Sunday for a 3 p.m.
matchup with Coastal Carolina.
