ECU alumni take court prior to Marshall game

East Carolina's fifth annual basketball alumni game will be free to the general public at Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum at 3 p.m. today, part of an entire day of activities planned for former ECU men's basketball letterwinners.

Pirate fans will be able to interact with former players and get autographs prior to and immediately following the contest. Former stars such as ECU Hall-of-Famers Theodore "Blue" Edwards, Cecil Heath and Jerry Woodside, along with other alums, have confirmed their plans to be on hand.

The game will serve as a prelude to ECU's Conference USA matchup with Marshall, which tips off at 7 p.m. The letterwinners will be recognized during halftime of the Marshall-ECU game.

Report: Top three apparent for NFL draft

USA Today Sports Weekly — and many others — are projecting with a high degree of certainty who will be the top three choices in the NFL draft April 29-30.

Those three players — Southern California's Reggie Bush (running back) and Matt Leinart (quarterback) and Texas' Vince Young (quarterback) — appear virtual locks to go in the first three picks, which are currently held by the Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans.

DUI charge lodged against Sutton

Oklahoma State University basketball coach Eddie Sutton was charged Friday with DUI and two other misdemeanors in connection with his Feb. 10 vehicle accident.

According to affidavits filed by the Payne County prosecutor's office, Sutton was charged with aggravated operation of a motor vehicle — involving person injury — while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, according to a Tulsa World report.

The charge is a misdemeanor, carrying a maximum jail time of up to one year, along with a $2,500 fine.

The affidavit noted Sutton's blood-alcohol level after the crash was .22, nearly three times the threshold .15 for a DUI charge.

Sutton was also charged with the misdemeanors of driving left of center and speeding.

The left-of-center charge carries a maximum jail time of 10 days and a $10 to $100 fine.

Sutton, 69, received a gash on his head in the North Washington Street accident. Authorities said his SUV slammed into the back of a car driven by Teresa Jean Barnard, 42, of Perry, who was also injured.

Sutton has expressed appreciation for the support he has received following last Friday night’s auto accident on the university's athletic website, okstate.com.

In a statement to the media via telephone, Sutton, who is on a medical leave of absence, acknowledged that he has an alcohol problem and plans to enter a treatment center next week.

During the telephone statement, Sutton apologized for his mistake and the harm he has caused his family, his team, the university and its fans. OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly said the entire OSU family is behind Coach Sutton and will support him and his family in the days and weeks ahead.
