Miami brings back Olson to run offense

Rich Olson, one of the most respected offensive coaches in football, has been named offensive coordinator at the University of Miami. He will also coach the team's running backs.

Olson worked for three years on the Hurricanes' staff with great success in the early 1990s.

A 29-year coaching veteran in college football and the NFL, Olson has tutored some of the top names in college and pro football. He was UM's wide receivers coach in 1992 and was an integral part of Gino Torretta's success when the quarterback won the Heisman Trophy that year.

Olson has also coached quarterbacks Daunte Culpepper, Jake Plummer and Warren Moon in the NFL, in addition to star signal callers Trent Dilfer, Eric Dickerson and Craig James in the college ranks.

Mississippi College Choctaw mascot gets OK

The NCAA staff review committee has removed Mississippi College from the list of colleges and universities subject to restrictions on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery at NCAA championships, it has been reported on ncaa.com.

In the review of the particular circumstances regarding Mississippi College, the NCAA staff review committee noted that Mississippi College's use of the Choctaw name and associated imagery had received the approval of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Therefore, said the committee, the college will not be subject to the terms of the policy restrictions.

The report indicates that the NCAA Executive Committee recognizes that a Native American tribe is a distinct political community and, therefore, respects the authority of the tribe to permit universities and colleges to use its name and imagery.

The NCAA recognizes that there are, and will be, disagreements among Native American individuals, groups and tribes concerning the use of mascots, nicknames and imagery in sports, the report adds. In those instances in which a tribe endorses the use of its name and associated imagery, says the report, the NCAA defers to the judgment and will of the tribe.

UNC-Pembroke has received approval to remain the Braves.
