NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Former star QB to represent N.C. in Congress

For mountain Democrats, the defeat of eight-term Republican congressman Charles Taylor was a long time coming — 16 years, to be exact.

And it took a political newcomer, former Tennessee Volunteer and NFL quarterback Heath Shuler, to do it, according to an Asheville Citizen-Times report.

Shuler, 34, claimed victory Tuesday night with 123,856 votes to 106,632 for Taylor, with all 298 precincts reporting in unofficial tallies. Shuler collected 53.7 percent of the vote, to 46.3 percent for Taylor.

“We’ve talked about it — how our country deserves better — and it’s going to get better,” Shuler said to raucous Democrats gathered at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville.

Homicide unit probing death of Miami player

A University of Miami season of tumult turned horrific Tuesday night when Hurricanes defensive lineman Bryan Pata was shot and killed at his apartment complex in Kendall, according to a Miami Herald report.

''He was shot in the head,'' Miami Central High School coach Anthony Saunders said Tuesday night. ``He is dead.''

The 6-4, 280-pound senior, who went to Miami Central, was last seen on campus at football practice late Tuesday afternoon, just hours before the shooting.

According to Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland, police officers were dispatched to the Colony Apartments, 9315 SW 77th Ave., at 7:30 p.m. where they found Pata, 22, dead of a gunshot wound. His body was found near bushes in the parking lot area.

His mother, Ronette Pata, jumped out of a Lexus, where family was gathering outside the police line at about 9:30 p.m., screaming, ''My baby! My baby!'' She then began to slip and collapsed into the arms of a Miami-Dade detective in front of media members and onlookers.

She was wearing her son's No. 95 University of Miami jersey, with the words ''No. 1 Mom'' on the back.

Rutland could not release more details because homicide detectives are still interviewing witnesses and trying to piece together what happened.

Krog's 73 puts her in top five at Augusta

East Carolina sophomore Lene Krog carded a second-round score of 73, one-over par, to claim her first top-five finish of the 2006 season at the Lady Jaguar Invitational presented in Augusta, GA. The tournament was being held at the par-72, 5,954-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.

The Leir, Norway native, who competed in just her second tournament of the year, finished with a score of 151 (78-73) five strokes behind individual tournament champion Amanda Smith of host Augusta State. Joanna Klatten (Georgia State) claimed a second place finish with a three-over par 147 (73-74), while Memphis' Dawn-Marie Conaty (150) was third, according to an ECU athletic media relations release.

The Pirates (20-37-0) finished in third place with an event score of 619 (311-308), 13 strokes behind tournament champion Georgia State (606). Augusta State (615) was second, while Memphis finished fourth with a score of 627.

Pirates Abby Bools (78-75-153) and Ana Maria Puche (75-80-155) were seventh and eighth respectively. Jessica Hauser shot a tournament score of 162 (82-80) to finish tied for 24th, while Michelle Williams (165) ended up with a share of 32nd place. Playing in her second career collegiate tournament, junior Melanie Granville (197) finished 40th.

The tourney marks the end of ECU's fall schedule. The Lady Pirates will open their spring slate Feb. 18-20 with the Papa John's Collegiate Championship at Don Shula Golf Club in Miami, FL.
