East Carolina won two-of-three at Charlotte over the weekend, thanks
largely to noteworthy hitting and pitching.
Pirate first baseman DARRYL LAWHORN, who leads the nation's freshmen in
home runs with 13, extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He went
9-for-21 (.429) last week and has 22 multi-hit games on the season.
In last week's NCAA statistics, ECU's pitching staff ranked 14th
nationally with a 3.39 ERA. After this past week's play, that figure has
dipped to 3.37. The Pirates have recorded 271 strikeouts in 323 innings
pitched and have walked just 101.
Sophomore right-hander SCOTT GREENE, who had not pitched since the 2000
season due to a shoulder injury, made a successful return to the mound
when he started against Duke last Wednesday. Greene held the Blue Devils
to just one run and three hits over five innings and struck out four to
gain the win.
ECU has already established a new season-high for home game attendance
as 38,327 fans have packed Harrington Field for the school's first 23
home games. That mark is likely to get a substantial boost this week
when the Pirates host in-state nemesis North Carolina (Wednesday) and
Conference USA rival South Florida (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
