CHICAGO – Jerry Wainwright is leaving
the Richmond Spiders to take over the DePaul basketball program, the school
confirmed Wednesday.
Wainwright, a Berwyn native who was
50-41 record in three seasons at Richmond, replaces Dave Leitao, who left
for Virginia earlier this month.
DePaul plans to introduce Wainwright at
a news conference Thursday, university spokesman Scott Reed said.
The 58-year-old Wainwright has led
teams to the NCAA tournament in three of the last six seasons: Atlantic 10
member Richmond in 2004 and Colonial Athletic Association school UNC-Wilmington
in 2000 and 2002.
During eight seasons with the Seahawks,
Wainwright was 136-103, including a 23-10 mark in 2002, when the team upset
Southern California in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Wainwright was an assistant coach at
Wake Forest from 1986 to 1994, serving under head coaches Bob Staak and Dave
Odom, before taking his first head coaching job at UNC-Wilmington in 1994.
DePaul finished 20-11 overall and 10-6
in Conference USA last season and made it to the second round of the NIT.
The Blue Demons will join the Big East
beginning in the 2005-06 season as part of a 16-team conference that will
add Marquette, Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida.
Shriners move East-West game to Texas
SAN ANTONIO – The nation's oldest
college all-star football game is moving from San Francisco to San Antonio.
The East-West Shrine Game, played since
1923, will be held in the Alamodome beginning next year, game officials said
Wednesday. The 2006 game is scheduled for Jan. 21.
Jack Hart, the game's executive
director, said the directors and trustees of the Shriners Hospitals approved
the move last week. The game raises money for the 22 Shriners medical
facilities around the country.
Board chairman Raoul Frevel said the
Shriners faced rising costs if they wanted to keep playing in San Francisco,
where the game had been played since its inception.
He said attendance had been dropping
and the Shriners wanted a more centralized location for the contest, which
pits standout players from eastern U.S. colleges against those from the
West.
