NCAA roundup: Sun Devils
advance to Omaha
Arizona State 9, Cal State-Fullerton
8
FULLERTON Joe Persichina hit a
tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and Arizona State rallied from a
five-run deficit and hung on to eliminate defending national champion Cal
State-Fullerton with a 9-8 win Sunday.
The Sun Devils, who lost the first game
of the best-of-three super regional series when a balk was called during an
intentional walk, advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., for
the first time since 1998.
ASU reached the super regional matchup
by sweeping three games in the
Tempe regional, including a 9-6 win
over East Carolina.
Persichina's solo shot gave Arizona
State an 8-7 lead and J.J. Sferra drove in a run on a groundout in the top
of the ninth.
Brett Bordes gave up a solo homer to
Brett Pill leading off the bottom of the inning, but retired the next three
batters for his fourth save. Jason Urquidez (10-4) won.
Tuffy Gosewisch had five hits and three
RBIs to help the Sun Devils (39-23) come back from a 7-2 deficit. Andrew
Romine hit his first career homer to make it 7-5 in the sixth inning.
Sergio Pedroza homered in the fourth
for the Titans (46-18), but it wasn't enough to prevent Vinnie Pestano (3-4)
from taking the loss.
Baylor 7, Clemson 1
WACO Mark McCormick struck out 10 and
scattered five hits in 8 1-3 innings and Jeff Mandel went 2-for-4 with two
RBIs.
McCormick (8-3) threw a career-high 137
to help the Bears (43-22) even their super regional series at 1-1 with the
final game set for Monday.
Taylor Harbins' infield single in the
third scored a run for Clemson (43-22). Josh Cribb (8-5) allowed 12 hits and
seven runs. He struck out five.
Tulane 7, Rice 0
NEW ORLEANS Micah Owings pitched a
three-hit shutout and top-seeded Tulane kept its season alive.
The Green Wave (54-10) took a 1-0 lead
in the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Scott Madden drew a bases-loaded
walk from starter Joe Savery. Tulane, designated the visiting team, scored
six times in the top of the ninth.
Rice (45-18), which scored nine runs in
the first five innings of its series-opening 9-5 victory on Saturday, hasn't
scored in 13 innings since.
Owings (11-4) faced only three batters
above the minimum 27. He struck out eight and walked one.
MISSISSIPPI 6, TEXAS 4
TEXAS 3, MISSISSIPPI 1
OXFORD Nick Peoples and Carson Kainer
each homered, and Texas dodged a late rally to even its super regional
series at one game apiece.
Earlier, Ole Miss beat the Longhorns in
the completion of the best-of-three series opener, which was suspended due
to rain Saturday night.
The Rebels (48-19) loaded the bases
with one out in the ninth on a walk to Brian Pettway and singles by Stephen
Head and Alex Presley. But J. Brent Cox got Cooper Osteen to bounce into a
game-ending double play, sealing his 16th save. Freshman Adrian Alaniz (6-3)
struck out six and gave up one run.
Matt Maloney (8-3) lost for the first
time since May 7, a span of five starts.
In the completion of the suspended
opener, Mark Wright capped a four-run seventh inning with a tiebreaking,
two-run single.
Texas (50-16) brought the tying run to
the plate with one out in the ninth, but Stephen Head retired Chance
Wheeless and Taylor Teagarden.
SOUTHERN CAL 9, OREGON STATE 8 (10
innings)
CORVALLIS Billy Hart hit a go-ahead,
bases-loaded single in the 10th inning and Southern California rallied late
to even its NCAA super regional series at one game apiece.
Oregon State (45-10) took an 8-3 lead
in the seventh inning when Mitch Canham launched a three-run homer to
right-center.
But the Trojans (41-21) rallied with
two runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth to tie it.
To open USC's 10th, Roberto Lopez was
hit by reliever Kevin Gunderson (6-3), then went to second on Blake Sharpe's
base hit. An out later, Gunderson hit catcher Jeff Clement to load the
bases. Eddie Kunz gave up the single to Hart.
Paul Koss (4-1) earned the victory,
allowing three runs on two hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Broadway among 3 finalists for
Clemens Award
FORTH WORTH Texas Christian's Lance
Broadway has been named one of three finalists for the Roger Clemens Award.
The award is given annually by the
Greater Houston Baseball Association to college baseball's top pitcher. The
trophy will be awarded during a dinner at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in
Houston on July 14.
Broadway, the 15th overall pick in last
week's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, recently finished his junior
season with a school and Conference USA record 15 wins versus one loss. One
of the wins came on
April 1 against East Carolina.
Broadway compiled a 1.62 ERA in 117
innings pitched and set a new single-season school record with 151
strikeouts while walking only 35 batters. He was named C-USA Pitcher of the
Year after notching a 9-0 record in in 10 league starts.
The other finalists are Cesar Carillo
of Miami (FL) and Tennessee's Luke Hochevar. Broadway and Carillo are also
finalists for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy.
