Paper: Liberty Bowl seals deal with C-USA, SEC
It appears that Conference USA has
solidified its position with its most important bowl partner and locked up a
lucrative annual postseason date with a Southeastern Conference opponent.
The
Memphis Commercial Appeal is
reporting that the Liberty Bowl, located in Memphis, will continue to have
first dibs on C-USA teams through 2009 and starting in 2006 will pit that
choice against an SEC team.
According to the paper's account, both
leagues have signed a deal that would pay each team more than the $1.5
million dollars doled out last season to Louisville and Boise State.
Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve
Ehrhart would not comment on whether an agreement has been reached but
indicated the bowl has called a press conference for noon today at the
Memphis Downtown Marriott, reported the paper.
This year's game, scheduled for noon on
New Year's Eve, pairs a C-USA team against an open selection and will
conclude the bowl's current contract with the league. The bowl's contract
with the Mountain West Conference, which had provided C-USA's opponent since
1998, expired last season.
The Liberty Bowl has featured a team
from Conference USA or its predecessor — a group of I-A independents that
banded together in 1994-95 as the "Liberty Bowl Alliance" — for the last 11
years.
East Carolina landed back-to-back
Liberty Bowl berths as a member of the alliance in 1994-95, losing to
Illinois in 1994 and defeating Stanford the following year.

the Liberty Bowl was first played in 1959:

Busted legs deplete Memphis quarterback corps
MEMPHIS — For the second time in just
three games, the University of Memphis football team suffered a blow to the
offense by losing another quarterback to a broken leg.
Redshirt freshman Will Hudgens started
his second game of his career against Tulsa this past Saturday and late in
the fourth quarter suffered a fractured fibula and ligament damage in his
right leg. He had a cast on his leg for the plane trip home.
Hudgens was to be evaluated by team
doctors on Monday and a course of treatment was to be decided at that time.
Hudgens started the last two games
after starting quarterback Patrick Byrne broke both his right fibula and
tibia in the first offensive series of the season opener against Ole Miss.
The Tigers will face unbeaten Texas-El
Paso (3-0) this weekend at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The game, slated
for a 7 p.m. kick-off, will be broadcast by CSTV.

Memphis Athletics news release.
