Calipari signs new contract with Tigers
Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson
has announced that John Calipari, who led his Tiger basketball team to a
Conference USA championship and a number one seed in this year's NCAA
Tournament, has signed a new contract which will keep the renowned coach at
the helm of the Memphis program through the 2010-11 season.
"Six years ago we hired John Calipari
as head coach for our basketball program and he made three commitments,"
Johnson said in a release on the Conference USA web site. "First, graduate
student-athletes under his tutelage. Next, place this basketball program on
a national stage and compete for championships. Finally, rekindle and
strengthen the bond between the city and the basketball program. He's
accomplished all three. John has committed to the university and the
community, just as we have committed to him."
Calipari guided the Tigers to a
record-setting year in 2005-06. Memphis posted a 33-4 record, won the C-USA
regular season and tournament titles, earned a top seed in the NCAA
Tournament and made a run to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
The 33-4 record and the 33 victories
were the best in school history. The league regular season title was the
Tigers' second in three seasons, and the conference tournament crown was the
program's first since 1987. The No. 1 seed was the first in school history,
and the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance was the Tigers' first since
1992.
Memphis finished the year ranked No. 4
in the Associated Press poll and No. 6 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll,
the highest final poll ranking in school history.
"My statements have never wavered,"
said Calipari. "As long as the school was committed to having a top-10
national program, I wanted to stay. Obviously, I feel that this has been
done in the past and will continue to be done in the future. I look forward
to coaching this wonderful group of players to heights unseen in this
program's history."
N.C. State offered its head coaching
position to Calipari before he agreed to the new contract.
UAB's Davis selects
staff
New UAB basketball head coach Mike
Davis announced the addition of three veteran coaches to his staff Friday.
Assistant coaches Kerry Rupp and Donnie Marsh follow Davis from his staff at
Indiana while former Ole Miss assistant Tracy Dildy rounds out the Blazers
staff.
All three will assume the title of
assistant head coach, according to the university's athletic web site.
"I am excited to bring to UAB an
outstanding staff that brings with them a lot of experience," Davis said.
"Two of these coaches were on the bench with me at Indiana and are very
familiar with me; the other is, I think, the best recruiter in the country.
Each of the three has had the opportunity to be a head coach, so UAB can
feel rest assured the program is in good hands."
NBA D-League
lowers minimum age
The NBA Development League announced
Friday that the league has instituted a new player eligibility rule that
lowers the minimum age requirement to 18 years, effective with the 2006-07
D-League season, according to an announcement on
nba.com.
A player is eligible to be signed to a
D-League contract if he is or will be at least 18 years old during the
calendar year in which the D-League Draft is held and his high school class
has graduated. Also, the player may not have attended college in the United
States in the academic year that takes place during the season covered by
his D-League contract.
“While we believe that the college game
is the best choice for the majority of players coming out of high school,
not every player will have the ability or desire to pursue that route,”
D-League Vice-President of Player Development Michael Curry said. “This new
rule will now give players the option of playing minor league professional
basketball in the United States."
The D-League's new eligibility rule
will go into effect at the same time as the NBA's new age limit, which
requires players to be 19 years old and one year out of high school in order
to sign an NBA contract or be eligible for the draft.
