Stanford hires Iowa athletic director
Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby has
been selected as Stanford's next AD, it was announced Tuesday. He will begin
work in July.
Bowlsby has gained a national
reputation for his skill and integrity in running one of the country's most
ambitious and successful Division I-A athletics programs. At Stanford, he
will succeed Ted Leland, who left at the beginning of the year to become
vice president for university advancement at the University of the Pacific.
Former football coach Bill Walsh has
been director of the department on an interim basis since Jan. 1.
As Iowa's athletic director for nearly
15 years, Bowlsby has piloted a program that has excelled at football, men's
and women's basketball, wrestling and many other sports while providing
oversight for a department that includes 24 varsity sports and managing a
budget of $56 million.
Houston,
Memphis tied in C-USA golf
Houston and Memphis shared the
second-round lead at 565 (-11) following Tuesday's second round action of
the 2006 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship on the par 72, 7,000-yard
course at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, MS. The 42nd-ranked
Cougars erased a nine-shot deficit after posting the low-team round of the
day at 280 to pull even with the Tigers, who shot a one-over, 289 following
a first-round total of 276.
Junior Pablo Acuna led a trio of
Cougars under par as he fired a six-under, 66 to share low-individual round
honors with Central Florida senior Sonny Nimkhum. The Golden Knight veteran
shares the overall lead at 138 (-6) with Southern Methodist senior Will
Dodson, who registered his second-straight round in red figures with a 68.
Dodson shot a 70 in the opening round.
Dodson has the 35th-ranked Mustangs in
third place, four shots behind the two leaders at 569 (-7). Nimkhum helped
UCF move within six shots of the lead at 571 (-5) as the Golden Knights had
the second-best round of the day at 283. 24th-ranked Tulsa also came in
under par through two rounds after posting a 287 to sit at 572 (-4) for the
tournament.
Alabama-Birmingham sits in sixth place
(577, +1), Rice is seventh (581, +5) and host Southern Miss moved up a spot
to eighth at 583 (+7). East Carolina (593, +15) and Marshall (599, +20) also
moved up one spot in the standings to place ninth and tenth, respectively.
Texas-El Paso fell back to 11th at 602 (+26), while Tulane rounds out the
team scoring for the second-straight day at 623 (+47).
Another Huskie
headed for NBA
University of Connecticut junior Marcus
Williams announced Tuesday that he will forego his final season of
eligibility and make himself available for the 2006 NBA Draft.
Williams is the third UConn player to
declare for the draft in the past three weeks. Sophomore Rudy Gay entered
the draft on April 17, while junior Josh Boone entered the draft on April 7,
but has not hired an agent.
