Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
ECU
announces Metcalf in compliance post
Tim Metcalf, who served as assistant director of
compliance at Georgia Southern University the past eight years, has been
named director of compliance at East Carolina, according to an announcement
from the university's athletic media relations department.
Metcalf, who has already reported to his post, takes
over for senior woman administrator Rosie Thompson, who was elevated to
associate athletic director.
Prior to his appointment in the athletic department
at GSU, Metcalf served as a graduate teaching assistant in the department of
kinesiology at GSU, where he was named graduate teaching
assistant-of-the-year in 1996.
He also spent one year as an assistant football
coach at Winston-Salem State, where he earned his second bachelor of science
(B.S.) degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in physical
education. Before enrolling at Winston-Salem State, Metcalf spent four years
as a stunt performer in Hollywood.
Metcalf is a 1983 graduate of Appalachian State,
where he earned a B.S. degree in criminal justice. He received his master's
degree in sports management from Georgia Southern in 1997.
ECU
women's soccer starts season at ODU
The East Carolina women's soccer team will play its
first game of the 2006 season on the road against Old Dominion tonight at
8:30 p.m. in Norfolk, according to a university athletic media relations
release.
After dropping their lone scrimmage against Longwood
(2-1), the Pirates hope to get off on the right-foot with a win against the
non-conference Monarchs.
Last season, ECU (8-12-1) struggled on the road,
winning three of nine games. The 2006 schedule for the Pirates is heavy on
road games early. After traveling to ODU, the following two games against
Campbell (Aug. 28), and Western Carolina (Sept. 1) will be on the road.
After the Lady Pirates come home on Sept. 3 to play Charlotte, they will
then compete in the N.C State tournament in Raleigh, facing off against
American and Georgia State.
This season, ECU welcomes 13 newcomers to the squad,
hoping to bring fresh legs to their up-tempo style of play. They have seven
returning starters, while they lost seven including all-time points leader
and goal scorer Meghan McCallion.
Pirate volleyball hosts East Carolina Invitational
East Carolina volleyball opens the 2006 season
tonight as it hosts the East Carolina Invitational sponsored by City Hotel &
Bistro, according to a university athletic media relations release.
The tournament opens with Furman and Virginia Tech
facing off at 4 p.m. before the Pirates officially start their season at 7
p.m. against William & Mary. ECU returns seven letterwinners from last
year's team that finished 20-11.
