NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Boise State
rolls past Bulldogs
No. 14-ranked Boise State
knocked off Fresno State 45-21 Wednesday on a chilly night at Bronco
Stadium before an announced crowd of 30,604, according to a Fresno Bee
report.
The win keeps Boise State (9-0) in the hunt for a Bowl Championship
Series game.
Fresno State, meanwhile, will
see its run of consecutive bowl games come to a halt after seven straight.
The Bulldogs (1-7) have lost seven games in a row for the first time since
1929, and will log their second losing season in coach Pat Hill's 10 years
and their first since 1998.
Reale, Pirates earn seconds at Kitty Hawk
East Carolina
junior Anthony Reale fired a 36-hole total of 135, five-under
par, to finish in second place at the Seascape Invitational
hosted by Old Dominion at Kitty Hawk. Reale shot six-under
through the first 18 holes before carding a one-over par on the
final 18 holes to finish one stroke behind individual medalist
Kyle Spahr of Campbell.
As a team, East Carolina
recorded a two-round total of 560 to finish in second place, four strokes
behind team champion Campbell, according to an ECU athletic media relations
release.
ECU senior Robin Smith,
sophomore Andre Thorsen and freshman Tripp Brizendine each recorded a top 20
finish. Smith finished tied for 14th with a two-over par 142 (67-75), while
Thorsen (72-71) and Brizendine (71-72) tied for 17th with a three-over par
143.
The Pirates' second place
finish was their highest of the season, which concluded the fall season.
ECU's spring season begins Feb. 26 in Hilton Head, SC.
Pirates promote Kozlowski on softball staff
Natalie Kozlowski, who has
served as an assistant on the East Carolina softball staff for the past six
seasons, has been promoted to associate head coach according to an
announcement by Pirates' head coach Tracey Kee.
Kozlowki has been on the ECU
staff for six years, serving as the offensive and outfield coach throughout
her time with the Pirates. Kozlowski also has had the responsibility as
recruiting coordinator, scouting director and conditioning coach during her
tenure at ECU, according to a release from the ECU athletic media relations
department.
Kozlowski's charges dominate
the ECU record book as she is responsible for teams ranked first or second
in 10 out of 11 categories. Offensively, her squads rank number one in games
played, at-bats, home runs, base on balls, hits, RBI and doubles. They are
ranked second in batting average and stolen bases.
Kozlowski guided the Pirate
offense to its highest home run total in school history in 2005 with 57,
shattering the previous record of 40 set in 1999. Last season the ECU
offense led Conference USA in sacrifice bunts with 89, while finishing third
in doubles, second in sacrifice flies and second in stolen bases. Kozlowski
has coached sixteen all-conference members at ECU.
Kozlowski was an assistant to
Kee when Kee recognized as Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2005. The
Pirates have amassed a record of 252-147 with Kozlowski as an assistant,
including the school record 60-win season in 2000.
"Being able to retain Coach
Koz for seven years has made a direct impact on our program's success," said
Kee. "She's a tireless worker with an uncanny teaching ability. Working side
by side with a coach who's loyal, driven and completely committed to our
program and university is priceless. Her impact on the development of our
student-athletes has been and will be felt for many years to come."
