Hot
water getting deeper for Durham DA
Ethics charges have been
added to a complaint filed by the state bar association against
Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, who vigorously
brought sexual assault charges against three Duke lacrosse
players during his successful re-election campaign last year.
The new charges by the bar accuse
Nifong of withholding DNA evidence and making misleading statements to the
court. Nifong stands to be disbarred.
DNA tests at a private lab, arranged by
the district attorney's office, revealed genetic material on the body and
undergarments of a 28-year old stripper who was hired for a Duke lacrosse
team party. Tests showed the material came from several men but did not
match any Blue Devil team members.
Nifong apparently withheld that
evidence from defense attorneys for the players.
WVU's Rodriguez hires Smith, shuffles staff
Rod Smith has joined the West Virginia
football staff as quarterbacks coach, part of a reorganization of the staff
of Rich Rodriguez.
Bill Stewart has been promoted from
quarterbacks/special teams coach to associate head coach in charge of
special teams and tight ends. Stewart will assist Rodriguez with the
external affairs of the football program.
Offensive coordinator/running backs
coach Calvin Magee will continue in his role and has been promoted to
assistant head coach, assisting Rodriguez on internal assignments with the
program.
Defensive backs coach Tony Gibson will
continue in that assignment and has also been promoted to recruiting
coordinator for the Mountaineers.
Smith comes to WVU after six seasons at
South Florida. He was the Bulls’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks
coach from 2005-06. Prior to that, he coached the quarterbacks and
coordinated the passing game.
East Carolina is scheduled to play West
Virginia next season in Morgantown.
