Conference USA draft
picks dominated by
handful of programs

From C-USA and staff reports

Five of Conference USA's 12 baseball playing schools — Houston, South Florida, Tulane, East Carolina and Texas Christian — accounted for 14 of the league's 19 selections in this week's Major League Draft.

Houston shortstop/pitcher Jesse Crain was the first Conference USA player chosen, going to the Minnesota Twins in the second round. Cougars catcher Chris Snyder was selected later in the same round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ten of the 12 schools that play baseball in C-USA had at least one player taken, with Houston leading the way with four selections. Tulane and South Florida had three players chosen and two selections came from East Carolina and Texas Christian, while Charlotte, Cincinnati, Louisville, Saint Louis and Southern Miss each had one player chosen.

The World Series champion Diamondbacks selected four C-USA standouts altogether, more than any other major league organization. The Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers each chose two Conference USA players.
